Madeira is an island for getting out and exploring, from the steep mountains and ancient Laurissilva forest to dramatic Atlantic coastline, volcanic pools and the streets of Funchal. Walk the island’s famous levadas, hike through the mountains, drive along winding coastal roads and swim in the natural pools of Porto Moniz. In Funchal, explore the historic Old Town, visit the Mercado dos Lavradores and take the cable car up to Monte, before returning to the coast for a sunset overlooking the Atlantic. Beyond the capital, Madeira’s small size makes it easy to see a lot in a few days, with viewpoints, waterfalls, mountain villages and coastal towns scattered across the island. It is a destination best experienced by car, giving you the freedom to stop along the way and discover more of the island.

Built directly over the Yas Marina Circuit, W Abu Dhabi is one of the UAE’s most recognisable hotels. Its curved glass structure crosses the Formula 1 track, creating views that are unlike those at most hotels in Abu Dhabi. By day, you can watch cars circle the circuit from the property, while Yas Marina, Yas Beach and the island’s major attractions are all within easy reach.

Inside, the hotel carries the bold, contemporary style associated with the W brand, with 499 rooms and suites overlooking the circuit, marina or Yas Island. There are multiple restaurants and bars, swimming pools, AWAY Spa and a fitness centre, while the dining options range from Japanese-inspired dishes at W Lounge to Mediterranean-inspired dishes at Garage. The rooms are designed for the modern traveller, with floor-to-ceiling windows and plenty of colour and character.

The hotel is at its most exciting during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, when the Formula 1 action takes place literally beneath and around the property. But you do not need to visit during race weekend to appreciate the setting. With Yas Waterworld, Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi nearby, W Abu Dhabi works particularly well for a luxury Yas Island stay that combines the energy of the circuit with easy access to the island’s entertainment and leisure attractions.

Cairo is a city of extraordinary scale, where ancient monuments, medieval architecture and modern Egyptian life sit alongside one another. The Pyramids of Giza remain the obvious starting point, but the capital offers far more, from the Grand Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo to Coptic Cairo, Khan el-Khalili and the Nile. Across the river, Zamalek and Garden City offer a quieter side, with restaurants, cafés and hotels, while Giza is the base for Pyramids views. Cairo is busy, noisy and chaotic, but that is part of its charm. Allow three days, and plan by neighbourhood to avoid traffic. Opened in late 2025 near the Giza Plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum adds another major reason to visit, housing the world’s largest collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities.

Set along a kilometre of white sand beachfront on Shura Island, The Red Sea EDITION was the first hotel to open on the island, bringing EDITION’s contemporary take on luxury to Saudi Arabia’s western coastline. The resort sits within an archipelago of more than 90 islands, surrounded by coral reefs, clear lagoons and rich marine life, with views extending across the Red Sea and Shura Links, Saudi Arabia’s first 18-hole island golf course.

The 240-room resort was designed by Rockwell Group, with low stone and wooden pavilions shaped around the landscape. Earth walls, coral stone floors, natural oak and soft textiles reference the surrounding desert and reef, while floor-to-ceiling windows and open-air spaces keep the sea at the centre of the experience. Alongside its rooms and suites, the property has several dining venues, outdoor pools, a spa and gym, watersports facilities and a private stretch of beach.

The Red Sea EDITION is part of The Red Sea, Saudi Arabia’s flagship regenerative tourism destination, which is being developed across the country’s western coastline. Shura Island is now home to five operational hotels, with a total of 11 planned, alongside Shura Links and further dining, leisure and residential developments. The destination is powered entirely by renewable energy, with the five operational Shura Island hotels achieving LEED Platinum certification in July 2026.

Set across five kilometres of the Noonu Atoll, Soneva Jani is a private island resort renowned for its expansive overwater villas, vast lagoon and secluded setting. Designed around the surrounding natural landscape, the villas feature private pools, direct lagoon access and retractable roofs in selected suites. On-island activities range from snorkelling and diving to sailing, cycling and marine exploration. Dining is spread across a variety of venue concepts and bespoke experiences, offering guests the freedom to curate their days as actively or peacefully as they wish. The resort is accessible via a 40-minute seaplane flight from Malé.

Conservation has long been integral to Soneva Jani’s operational ethos. On 10 August 2026, it became the first resort in the Maldives to achieve Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measure (OECM) status. This designation encompasses 0.41 square kilometres on the eastern side of Medhufaru island, protecting vital reef, beach and mangrove ecosystems. The zone provides habitat for threatened marine, avian and botanical species, including Green turtles and critically endangered Hawksbill turtles, while its mangroves and wetlands provide natural shoreline defence, carbon storage, water regulation and habitat connectivity.

The official recognition follows a year of ecological surveys, spatial mapping and monitoring led by Soneva Conservation & Sustainability Maldives, supported by the Waitt Foundation and the Soneva Jani team. This milestone contributes to the Maldives’ commitment to the global 30x30 conservation target, backed by annual monitoring and reporting and a five-year formal review. For Soneva Jani, it establishes a benchmark for how luxury hospitality can support measurable, long-term environmental protection.

Deep within Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region, Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara sits in the Liwa Desert, around 90 minutes from the capital. True to its name, which translates to ‘Palace of the Mirage’, the property was designed to resemble an Arabian fortress. Earthy sandstone walls, shaded courtyards, grand arches and fortified watchtowers draw on traditional UAE architecture, with the entire property set against the vast landscape of the Empty Quarter.

The Empty Quarter is central to the experience, with camel rides and dune drives offering ways to explore the surrounding area. Private pool villas provide secluded views across the dunes, while Anantara Spa combines Thai wellness with Middle Eastern traditions, including a Moroccan hammam, sauna and ice room. Families have access to the Kids’ Club, with activities ranging from cooking classes and treasure hunts to yoga and dance, while AMANIE offers an adults-only infinity pool overlooking the dunes.

Dining ranges from poolside Mediterranean-inspired dishes at Ghadeer to Suhail, the rooftop steakhouse serving prime cuts alongside open desert views. The resort also provides access to the wider Liwa region, including the Liwa Oasis and the surrounding Al Dhafra landscape. But with its Arabian architecture, private villas, spa and extensive facilities, much of what makes Qasr Al Sarab distinctive is contained within the fortress walls.
