Whether it’s a colourful upcycled light fixture, or a crafty slip-on sleeve that turns any plastic bottle into a beautiful vase – each piece of décor showcased at Urban Nest tells a distinctive story, and comes from exclusive designer brands in Latin America and The Netherlands. These internationally renowned and hand-picked items support the local communities that they are fairly and sustainably sourced from, enriching homes, retail and commercial spaces across the Middle East. Above and beyond just supplying original products, Janaika and her team work together with designers to provide businesses with everything from wholesale to interior strategy. Be it a concept store, boutique shop, or your home, Urban Nest offers stunning interior design solutions that start a conversation, and one-of-a-kind pieces that make any space memorable.

A design brand a day: Kalager Design

We have a soft spot for two things: pieces made to be kept, and a bit of colour done confidently. Kalager is both. Furniture built from steel wire, handmade in Denmark, powder-coated in bold single tones, cobalt, pink, black, that hold up indoors or out for years. These are pieces you buy once and keep, familiar shapes redrawn in a lighter line, made properly enough to stay. Graphic, colourful, and the opposite of disposable.

A design brand a day: Danish Interior Brand

We chose Hübsch for the pieces that refuse to be background. A soft curve where you’d expect a straight edge, a pouf shaped like nothing else in the room, a lamp with a bit of an opinion. It’s Danish, so the restraint is always there underneath, but there’s a playful idea at work in everything they make, and that’s exactly the kind of character we like bringing into a space. It also holds up where it counts: the wood is FSC certified, the fabrics tested to Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX.

A design brand a day: Oi Soi Oi

We have a soft spot for objects made slowly, and those that carry two places at once. Oi Soi Oi is both. Every lamp is stretched by hand over a bamboo frame in the same small workshops the founders have worked with for almost twenty years. We carry them because that kind of patience is rare, and because the result, a Vietnamese silhouette in the quiet tones of Nordic design, looks like nothing else in a room.

A design brand a day: HKLIVING

We’re introducing the brands behind urban nest, one at a time, starting with the one that shaped us most. We didn’t choose HKliving to fill shelves. We chose it because it already thought the way we do. Long before we carried it, we believed a home should look like no one else’s, and here was a Dutch design brand saying the same in its own language: vintage soul, modern shape, pieces with enough character to hold a room instead of blending into it.

That instinct for character runs through every piece, and through most of what we bring in. When a brand’s point of view lines up with yours this closely, it becomes second nature to build around it.
