Hungry Jack’s Australia

Hungry Jack's is the Australian franchise of Burger King, operating under a different name due to pre-existing trademark laws. Founded in 1971 by Canadian-Australian entrepreneur Jack Cowin, it has grown into an Aussie fast-food staple with over 480 locations across the country.

When Burger King Corporation wanted to expand to Australia in the early 1970s, they discovered the "Burger King" name was already legally registered by a small takeaway shop in Adelaide.

Burger King granted Cowin the master franchise rights but allowed him to pick an alternative brand name from their parent company's (Pillsbury) portfolio. Cowin selected "Hungry Jack," which was the name of a US pancake mix. By changing it to a possessive—adding an apostrophe and 's'—Hungry Jack's was officially born. The very first restaurant opened in Innaloo, Western Australia, on April 18, 1971.

The Burger Wars (1990s–2000s)

For decades, Hungry Jack's operated as Burger King's master franchisee in Australia. However, as the original Adelaide trademark expired, Burger King Corporation decided they wanted a piece of the action.

Burger King Enters the Market: In the 1990s, the parent company bought the trademark and attempted to open their own branded Burger King restaurants in Australia to compete directly with Cowin's empire.

The Lawsuit: Hungry Jack's fought back. In 2001, they took Burger King Corporation to court for violating their master franchise agreement.

The Outcome: The court ruled in favour of Hungry Jack's. Burger King was forced to abandon its attempt to establish a separate presence in Australia. They subsequently licensed the Burger King trademark to Hungry Jack's and largely faded out, leaving Hungry Jack's as the undisputed brand.

Hungry Jack's TodayHungry Jack's operates as a culturally iconic, proudly Australian-owned company under Competitive Foods Australia. While their core menu mirrors Burger King (selling Whoppers and fries), they adapted heavily to Australian tastes over the decades. The chain has an enduring focus on fresh, made-to-order burgers and local ingredients.
