♥️♥️♥️

Hi friends ☺️

I hope 2022 is treating you well 🤩

Just checking in to ask for your support of the first National Defence Families Day which is expected to go ahead later this year. 👏👏👏

A little bit of background- After realising that there was not a day that recognises and celebrates the resiliency and sacrifice of defence spouses, children and families myself and a number of other defence family advocates sent the Minister for Defence Personnel Andrew Gee MP and Defence Minister Peter Dutton a joint submission asking that a national day be introduced. ☺️

Minister Gee has since agreed to the introduction of such a day and I (along with the other defence family advocates and Veteran Family Advocate Commissioner Gwen Cherne) now have a follow up meeting with the Minister this coming Tuesday to discuss next steps. 🙌

We would like to put together a list of organisations and individuals who support the introduction of such a day and we would love to be able to include your name and organisation on that list of supporters.

Can we count on your support and add you to the list of those who feel it is important to recognise defence spouses, children and families in this way? If interested please message us with your name ☺️

Please share this post with those who would also like to show their support (and don’t forget to tag them)!

Thanks so much for your support! I look forward to really creating something special for our defence families. A day where we can be celebrated, our contribution acknowledged and recognised. We love this for us, and I hope you will also be apart of this journey!

Many thanks,

Defence Kidz!

As you would know, a National Day of Commemoration is currently being discussed to formally recognise those who have served in the Middle East since 2001.

Thankfully, Defence Families Australia (DFA) will be providing a submission in the consultation process.

DFA would like to hear from our community on the most appropriate day to hold a commemoration day.

Follow the link to let them know your thoughts.

The slouch hat is an object strongly associated with Australian identity. 🇦🇺

The Army refers to the slouch hat by its official designation; Hat khaki fur felt (KFF) - to everyone else it is a ‘Slouch Hat’.

The word ‘slouch’ refers to the sloping brim. The brim is made from rabbit-fur felt or wool felt and is always worn with a puggaree.

History has it that the origins of the Slouch Hat began with the Victorian Mounted Rifles; a hat of similar design had been worn in South Africa by the Cape Mounted Rifles for many years before 1885.

The design of the Victorian Mounted Rifle hat originated from headgear of native police in Burma where Lieutenant-Colonel Tom Price had recognised its value.

The Victorian hat was an ordinary bush felt hat turned up on the right side. The intention of turning up the right side of the hat was to ensure it would not be caught during the drill movement of “shoulder arms” from “order arms”.

By 1890, State military commandants had agreed that all Australian forces, except the artillery corps, should wear a looped-up hat of uniform pattern that was turned up on the right side in Victoria and Tasmania, and on the left side in all other States to allow for different drill movements.

The Slouch Hat became standard issue headdress in 1903 and its brim position was mostly standardised.

The slouch hat became a famous symbol of the Australian fighting man during World War One and continued to be worn throughout World War Two. Its use since that time has made it a national symbol.

General Bridges, the first commander of the 1st Australian Imperial Force, was found wearing his slouch hat back to front when he was fatally wounded at Gallipoli. As a mark of respect and remembrance for Bridges, when the slouch hat is worn at Royal Military College - Duntroon, it has become traditional to wear the chinstrap buckle on the right side of the face and the brim down.

This tradition commenced at the Royal Military College in 1932. However, when the slouch hat is worn ceremonially, for example on ANZAC Day, it is worn in accordance with the wider Army custom - brim up and chinstrap buckle on the left hand side.

Today, Army members wear the slouch hat with the brim down to provide additional protection from the sun when not performing ceremonial duties.

The laundry in HMAS Ballarat II is a lot more colourful these days thanks to a range of personalised laundry bags. Colloquially known as dhoby bags, they were provided by a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting 's deployed members.

In a letter to crew members, Aussie Hero Quilts Founder Jan-Maree Ball said the bags were made by volunteers from across the country.

“Aussie Hero Quilts and Laundry Bags is an online community group that encourages people around Australia to make quilts and laundry bags to send to our deployed troops to let them know their service is appreciated,” Ms Ball said.

Bravo Zulu HMAS ANZAC 👏 Proud Navy moment!

HMAS ANZAC rescued 20 Indonesian fishermen who were stranded off the Australian coast, in the Pacific Ocean recently. The fishermen were assisted to board small boats and taken onto HMAS ANZAC where they were treated by the highly trained medical team. Bravo Zulu HMAS ANZAC and all involved 👏 🇦🇺 ⚓️
