Yesterdays temperatures here in Adelaide were intense. Today's aren't much better. Remember when you bring any animal home you're committing to the care of its entire livelihood. Obviously where possible make sure they can be inside.

If you're running outdoor avaries, you have additional responsibilities.
- recognising heat stress in your voiceless animal friends
- providing adequate shade, shelter and food
- misting helps, I personally ensure I drench the outside of my outdoor avaries multiple times throughout the day to reduce the overall temperature inside the avairy.
- ensure there is appropriate air flow
- if you feel rhe need to provide fruit and veg on these days, the coolest parts of the day only. And ensure you remove it in a reasonable time frame. Fruit and veg spoils quickly at high heat.
- know your birds! Ensure ones that don't like being misted have a bird bath present. Replace water with cool water often.
- heat rises. You'll notice budgies naturally will go to the ground in heat. Keep this in mind for your avaries and cages, having them higher up will mean there will be additional heat exposure.

It doesnt matter if you work, have children, have plans. You took on the responsibility of having pets, that responsibility doesnt end at adding food and water. They need adequate care, enrichment, socialisation, access to medical treatment.

Its important in summer to monitor the weather and plan out how to ensure their well being.

Animal care is a huge responsibility, and its not one that should be taken lightly.

Ouch!

Nah not really - this is an average day from a beautiful tame eclectus, who happened to be in a bad mood.

I was in a shop recently - and a person was looking for a Macaw, because they wanted a bird that was going to be friendly with their child, and they had heard Macaws were friendly. Even if they found the most magnificent Macaw on the planet, this should never be the mind set. Birds are still animals.

While they talk, it doesnt necessarily mean they can communicate their needs. Sometimes a bite is it's only way to communicate, and we need to accept and respect that when bringing them into our homes. A bird that gives the occasional bite is not a bad bird. It's a bird.

We've been incredibly busy raising some absolutely beautiful babies, like this Alexandrine. Who is shy, but clearly not camera shy. 💕

Its hard when you would love to keep all of them, but you know you don't have the capacity to keep them all long term, but that's okay, when they find their new homes, their new families will end up with a bird that's had a very loving up bringing.

Planning to grow this space! I aim to establish a business entity that sells hand-reared birds in a safe and ethical manner. The birds will be the central focus, with no aggressive sales tactics and honest information about the care required for each bird. I hope to provide educational resources and quality products, sharing my passion and showcasing the joy of having a feathered companion.
