Sometimes it’s important to step back and reflect.

Recently I applied (unsuccessfully) for a grant to learn how to make a bag like this far far away. When you work on your own, it can be difficult to back yourself. There’s no colleague beside you to ask for advice, or boss to point you in the right direction.

So I thought, bu**er it. I’ll just give it a go.

And I’m so pleased I did.

I’m not entirely sure what to call it - a briefcase, work bag, laptop bag…? Whatever the name, I now have a base pattern that I can adapt to accommodate whatever you need.

Inside there’s a laptop sleeve and zipped pocket, and that brown strip of leather across the back slips over the handle of your suitcase for travelling.

So here I am, sitting back, reflecting on what I managed to figure out for myself - and feeling a little bit chuffed.

Oops… I keep getting so busy making that I forget to show you what I’ve been working on.

This chocolate brown leather satchel was commissioned by Fiona as a surprise birthday gift for her husband. What an amazingly personal and thoughtful gift! And how good does it look paired with a Thirty Four Dukes merino wool coat? 👌🏻

One of my favourite parts of STUDIO Ella Jackson is slowly curating work by other makers whose dedication to design, materials and making mirrors my own. I’m hoping to create a space filled with genuinely unique quality pieces.

‘Fresh Water Fish’… another wonderfully imaginative print by Tom Samek.

Tom may no longer be with us, but his work continues to bring joy to the studio every day.

A new collection of his limited edition prints has arrived at STUDIO Ella Jackson.

Whimsical, clever and quietly humorous, each print invites you to pause, look a little longer and discover something new.

Every custom piece begins with a conversation.

Sometimes that happens around the workbench in the studio. Other times it’s through a message, email or phone call.

Once we have talked about what you’re looking for, I’ll develop a pattern before bringing your piece to life by hand in the studio. It’s a slower way of making, allowing every decision to be made with intention rather than compromise.

The final result isn’t just a beautiful bag. It’s one designed around the way you’ll use it, and made to be enjoyed for many years to come.

Whether you’re in Hobart or elsewhere, I’d love to hear your ideas.

If you have an Airbnb or accommodation venue, it’s often the little details that guests remember.

A leather compendium with everything they need to know, matching leather keyrings, and a set of leather coasters can quietly elevate the experience from functional to considered.

It was a pleasure making this collection for Cat from Salt + Steam. The deep green leather paired beautifully with the laser-engraved logos, and I love the look of the set.

Every morning begins the same way.

The lights come on, the coffee is made, the sign goes out and a fresh hide of leather is rolled onto the workbench.

It’s a quiet start before the conversations begin. Some people come through the door simply to browse. Others arrive with an idea they’ve been carrying for years: a bag for work, a gift for someone they love, something they’ve searched for but never quite found.

This is where those ideas begin to take shape.

If you’re in Hobart, I’d love to welcome you into my working leather studio. If you’re further afield, we can create something together wherever you are in Australia.

Perhaps your bag begins here too.

Sometimes the most challenging part of making a custom piece isn’t the sewing, it’s knowing when it’s right.

This navy blue messenger bag, made from kangaroo leather, began with an email from Yanni, who wanted to commission something special for her boyfriend.

I begin every commission with a pattern and a prototype, but leather always has the final say. It stretches, softens and behaves in ways you can’t completely predict, so I make small refinements as I go until everything feels exactly as it should.

With more than $500 worth of leather and materials on the workbench, I can sometimes feel my cortisol levels rising…every decision matters. 🤣

I’m really happy with how it turned out. It’s on its way to Sydney this week, and I hope Yanni and her boyfriend enjoy it for many years to come.

If you’ve been thinking about commissioning a bag that’s designed around the way you live and work, my inbox is always open.

I have a feeling you’re going to like this one.

A simple, elegant clutch on the outside, but thoughtfully organised on the inside.

Inside you’ll find two card sleeves (room for 6+ cards), a zipped section for coins and valuables, and enough space for your phone.

As always, I can tailor one to suit you - choose your leather colours, size, and whether you’d like a wrist strap, crossbody strap, or both.

It feels as though this has been a missing piece in my repertoire and I’m so pleased to have filled the void.

If you’re anything like me and don’t rate boring wallets, perhaps it’s time for something a little more special.
