19th Century Candle Shade Ornament

More than hundred years ago, this delightful star would have sat on a bronze stand shading the light of a candle and throwing a sparkling light, possibly for praying nuns. The five-pointed star, representing the five wounds of Christ, is made of a bronze frame studded with 55 clear glass stones of varying sizes and five deep blue glass stones. The raised centre of the star consists of Prussian blue coloured glass engraved with a Marian Cross symbolising Mary’s presence at the foot of the cross during Jesus’ crucification. The ornament was probably made in France in the late 1800s.

Silver Fish Servers with Ivory Handles
Consisting of a 32cm knife and a 24cm fork, this set bears the makers mark of Birmingham silversmith John Gilbert. The set is unusual because the fork was made a year before the knife as the letters “S” (1867 on fork) and “T’ (1868 on knife) indicate. Furthermore, the knife has a rounded shape contrary to the more common scimitar shape during the Victorian era. The knife is beautifully decorated with swirls and scrolls and a whale atop waves.
The set has only been washed in water and not been cleaned with any polish.
