When I started chemo, I had newborn twins and a 4.5yr old. When I had my double mastectomy, the twins were 6months old and my big kid had just turned 5. Radiation came a few months later. How did I get through it?
I had help, and I stopped being too proud to ask for help. I'm not usually one to let people know I'm struggling but during cancer treatment I had to swallow my pride and say it not once, not twice but too many times to count. And I am unbelievably grateful I had people around me that I could trust with my kids.
I also had to give myself grace. I was showing up the best I could. Some days I felt 'normal' - I had energy and felt like myself. Other days, I felt like I was in a fog and nothing I did could break it. But every day, I showed up however I could. On the good days, we made the most of it. Got out of the house, took the kids to the park, tidied up a little. On the foggy days, I asked for help. When the kids rested, I rested. I sat on the couch and read books to the kids, and joined in quiet play.
Did I have self-doubt that I was doing enough? Definitely! Did my kids know I love them and they felt loved? Definitely!
Whatever kind of day you are having, you are doing enough 🩷
