So after my quick butt slide down Mt Tavurvur I discovered I had put holes in the back of my shorts (bought in Hawaii in 2011). Finally got around to repairing them with the perfect iron-on patch 😎

I got a bit cocky coming down Mt Tavurvur near Rabaul, Papua New Guinea and it put me on my bum!

Mt Tavurvur is an active stratovolcano, with the last eruption in 2014. Major eruptions including in 1994 and 1932 have killed people and buried the town. It’s been my dream to climb it and look down in the crater for over a year.

Alotau - Part Two

Part if my tour included visiting waterfalls, close to the village we visited in part one.

On the way I saw tadpoles in the stream we were walking up and when we reached the waterfalls, I found lots of frogs hopping around! I was more excited about the frogs than the waterfalls.

Many frogs in Papua New Guinea are quite small, these were adult ones around the size of my fingernail!

I was also lucky to find a gecko hiding under bark in a tree.

Alotau - Part One

One of the stops during the tour with eastern bay tours was visiting a village where the tour operator’s family live.

As I was walking into the village, I had an elder approach me and call out ‘Snake Lady! I was afraid of snakes before I spoke with you!’ (I have visited this village during another cruise), which made my heart melt.

Last time the kids showed me how to spin shells like spinning tops. This time I brought a frisbee and like all frisbee adventures, it did end up on the roof at one point!

I also had the pleasure of trying local delicacies cooked in clay pots - cooked chestnuts and taro mona. These were made as a special request by the tour operator as she knew I was interested in these recipes 🥰.

Back on Carnival Encounter with Carnival Cruise Line, heading to Papua New Guinea as the Naturalist on board.

This will be my fourth time presenting talks about wildlife, environment and culture, however there is a slight change this time.

I’m normally in Black Circus which holds around 300 people. Last trip, there wasn’t even standing room and one of the best comments I got was “you made old people kneel on the floor”. So this time most of my talks are listed in the Marquee Theatre, which has 1000 seats! I’ve also made it to the Entertainment Spotlight page that is in every cabin on arrival (Alotau: Where Reef Meets Rainforest).

I love the opportunity to connect people with nature and usually in unsuspecting ways. I really enjoy when people come up to me a couple of days later and say ‘you’ve had me thinking about what you said about ###’.

Happy World Lizard Day!!

Meet Floki and Ragnar, our two adult shingleback lizards.

While they are often found next to each other, I think this is a case of Floki using Ragnar to get closer to the heat lamp!

Happy to be at the Off the Grid expo in Gympie this weekend, showcasing some of the venomous snakes that can be found on the Sunshine Coast.

Many thanks to Di for persevering for the last 3 years to have us here. Of course thanks to our sponsors and the snakes for hanging out!

The history of antivenin development in Australia is often overlooked.

This is a project I am involved in for restoring the grave site of 19 year old Kevin Budden, who captured the first coastal taipan in 1950. He was bitten and died but made sure the snake made it to Melbourne to be milked to produce antivenin to save others.

Happy World Snake Day!!

Snakes have always fascinated me, one of my earliest memories involve chasing a snake (probably an eastern brown snake) into the bush at a rest stop in outback New South Wales. I was around 4 at the time.

Throughout my career I have had the privilege of working with many different species in captivity, scientifically naming a new venomous species and track coastal carpet pythons (pictured) through urban areas.

While snakes are not for everyone, we often fear what we don't understand creating a 'heightened awareness' around that animal. The best thing to have is a healthy respect, where killing an animal is not the initial reaction.

I have a sword!!!

In Finland when you complete a PhD, you are presented with a sword. I have a good friend who is Finnish and he and his partner promised me a sword when I graduated.

Now I just need to give it a name….
