WELL, THIS JUST GOT FU***NG INTERESTING.

Mike Patton.

THE AVALANCHES.

Together.

Yep — the Faith No More / Mr. Bungle lunatic has turned up on THREE tracks on The Avalanches’ new album No Bad Memories.

Because apparently The Avalanches looked at their new record and thought:

"You know what this needs? Mike Patton doing whatever the f**k Mike Patton does."

Correct.

Patton appears on:

💥 Paradise Island — with Khadija Al Hanafi
💥 Superfun!™ TV Spot — with Haley Joel Osment
💥 Total Recall

And the rest of the guest list is completely cooked too — Karen O, Rivers Cuomo, Jamie xx, Panda Bear, Carly Simon, Barry Can't Swim, Haruomi Hosono and a stack more.

No Bad Memories lands October 16.

Australian sample maniacs + one of music's greatest weirdos.

Derek approves this nonsense.

Who else desperately wants to hear what an Avalanches/Patton collaboration actually sounds like?

BUSH. THE SUPERJESUS. YOU AM I. AT THE FU***NG CORNER HOTEL.

Melbourne, this is ridiculous.

On Thursday 24 September, Bush are ditching the arena-sized surroundings for one night and heading into the Corner Hotel for Triple M Fest.

And they're bringing The Superjesus and You Am I with them.

Yes.

Bush. At the Corner.

The same band responsible for Glycerine, Machinehead, Comedown, Swallowed and approximately 73% of the haircuts seen at alternative clubs in 1996.

The Superjesus kick things off with an early-morning performance, You Am I play later in the day, and Bush close the whole thing out at night.

Even better, this lands right in the middle of Bush's Australian tour with Shinedown — their first Australian headline run in decades.

There's only one slight complication:

You can't just buy a ticket.

Triple M is giving access away through the station/competition, which means somewhere in Melbourne right now a bloke who only knows Glycerine is probably going to win entry while an actual Bush tragic screams into a copy of Sixteen Stone.

Good luck, Melbourne.

Derek would like everyone to know he's suddenly extremely interested in winning radio competitions.

RADIOHEAD. AUSTRALIA. 2027.

Okay. Nobody panic.

Actually, f**k it.

PANIC.

Something is very clearly happening.

Mysterious “Radiohead 2027” cards have started appearing around Australia — including Melbourne, Sydney and Perth — with QR codes sending people directly to Radiohead's official W.A.S.T.E. network.

Which would be interesting enough.

Except Radiohead used basically the same mysterious-card trick before announcing their European shows.

And guitarist Ed O'Brien has already said Radiohead intend to tour again in 2027, with Asia/Oceania specifically mentioned as one of the regions they're looking at.

So...

👀

Nothing has officially been announced yet. No dates. No venues. No tickets. Live Nation currently has no Australian Radiohead shows on sale.

But considering Radiohead haven't toured Australia since 2012, we're allowing ourselves to become irresponsibly excited.

FIFTEEN YEARS, THOM.

Derek has already started emotionally preparing his wallet for the inevitable ticketing bloodbath.

If this happens, who's going?

And more importantly...

BRISBANE. PLEASE.

PAUL KELLY WENT BACK TO WHERE A LOT OF THE STORIES BEGAN.

Last Sunday, Paul Kelly returned to Kings Cross for a tiny one-off show at Sydney's Potts Point Hotel.

And this wasn't just another pub gig.

Kelly lived around the Cross in the '80s, playing late-night rooms like the Manzil Room — which once sat in the laneway behind the very hotel he just played. Those years and those streets would eventually work their way into some of the most unmistakably Australian songwriting ever put to tape.

Four decades later?

He came back.

Around 250 lucky punters got into the intimate show after tickets were distributed by ballot, with Kelly joined by his nephew Dan Kelly.

And the setlist was ridiculous.

Before Too Long.
Deeper Water.
From St Kilda to Kings Cross.
Randwick Bells.
Dumb Things.
How to Make Gravy.

Plus newer material from Seventy — and an unplanned opening tribute to Dolly Parton with I Will Always Love You.

Outside the venue there's now even a huge Scottie Marsh mural of Kelly, making the whole thing feel less like a promotional gig and more like somebody closing a very long circle.

There's something f**king great about this.

No arena.

No giant production.

Just one of Australia's greatest songwriters, a guitar and a couple hundred people in a pub, back in the neighbourhood that helped give him something to write about in the first place.

That's Australian music history happening in a pub.

And we're absolutely here for it.

TOXICITY IS 25 YEARS OLD.

We'll give everyone over 35 a moment to process that.

System Of A Down released Toxicity on September 4, 2001.

Twenty.

Five.

Fu***ng.

Years.

And what an absolutely unhinged record it still is.

Prison Song.
Needles.
Deer Dance.
Chop Suey!
Forest.
ATWA.
Toxicity.
Psycho.
Aerials.

Forty-four minutes of metal, Armenian musical influences, politics, melody, screaming, absurdity and Serj Tankian sounding like he'd been given six different songs to sing simultaneously and decided f**k it, I'll do all of them.

And somehow it worked.

Toxicity was weird as s**t in 2001.

It's still weird as s**t in 2026.

But that's probably why it hasn't aged like a lot of records from that era. There's still nothing that sounds quite like System Of A Down.

And yes, they're marking the anniversary with a new 25th Anniversary Edition, including the original album, a 7-inch of “Johnny”, an etched B-side and a double-sided poster. They've also finally corrected the name of the hidden closing track to “Der Voghormia”, rather than “Arto.”

But we're more concerned with something else:

HOW THE F**K WAS 2001 TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO?

Derek remembers buying this when it came out.

Derek will now be lying down.

🐒💿

What's the best track on Toxicity?

And anybody saying Chop Suey! is absolutely allowed to say Chop Suey!.

Sometimes the obvious answer is obvious for a reason.

🤘 GOOD THINGS 2026. JESUS CHRIST.

Right, whoever booked this lineup clearly found my teenage CD wallet and just started making phone calls.

Limp Bizkit. Simple Plan. Spiritbox. Bad Religion. Millencolin. Ministry. Alexisonfire. Guns N’ Roses—

Nah, kidding. Grinspoon. Just checking you were awake.

Then you’ve got Polaris, The All-American Rejects, Billy Talent, MXPX, Neck Deep, SPEED, Slowly Slowly, The Devil Wears Prada, Choirboys and a bloody Mudvayne/HELLYEAH set from Chad Gray.

And because apparently that wasn't enough, Millencolin are playing Pennybridge Pioneers in full and Alexisonfire are doing Crisis in full.

F**k off.

This isn't a festival lineup.

It's a divorced dad's Spotify Wrapped with a catering budget.

There are bands on here I haven't seen since my knees still worked properly.

And somehow Spiritbox and Polaris are sitting up there making sure everyone under 35 doesn't think the whole thing is being held at an RSL.

Honestly, this is what a festival lineup should look like.

A bit of punk.
A bit of hardcore.
A bit of metal.
A bit of emo.
A substantial amount of early-2000s emotional damage.

And Limp Bizkit at the top of the bill, because apparently we've finally stopped pretending Break Stuff isn't one of civilisation's greatest cultural achievements.

Good Things, you magnificent bastards.

See you in Brisbane.

I'll be the bloke near the back complaining about beer prices before completely losing his s**t when the opening riff starts.

🎸 SIC GIGS — BRISBANE THIS WEEK

Alright, you lot. I’ve done the hard work so you don’t have to spend Thursday night scrolling Facebook trying to work out where the f**k everyone is.

Every Monday, I’m rounding up the Brisbane gigs actually worth knowing about — local bands, touring acts, punk, rock, metal, indie and whatever other noisy s**t is happening in dark rooms around town.

This week is particularly cooked thanks to BIGSOUND, plus Flangipanis are saying goodbye at Crowbar, Skindred are hitting The Triffid, and approximately 700 bands appear to be playing within a three-kilometre radius of the Valley.

See the guide. Pick a gig. Leave the house.

Most importantly: go see the smaller bands. Buy their merch. Buy a beer. Tell your mates.

Brisbane doesn't have a live music scene because somebody declared it one.

It has one because people f**king turn up.

DEREK’S REVIEWS: DINOSAUR JR. — THERE NEAR

Right. New Dinosaur Jr.

Which means J Mascis has once again plugged a guitar into something that probably violates several workplace noise regulations and reminded everyone that you don’t need to reinvent yourself every three years to remain interesting.

There Near sounds exactly like what I want from Dinosaur Jr.

Big fuzzy guitars.
Mascis sounding like he’s only recently been informed the microphone is on.
Melodies buried underneath enough distortion to strip paint off a Corolla.

And then, inevitably, a guitar solo arrives that sounds like a lawnmower achieving consciousness.

Beautiful.

There’s something reassuring about Dinosaur Jr. still doing this. No desperate genre pivot. No electronic record. No collaboration with some bloke called Lil Toenail because Spotify told them to.

Just three blokes making an enormous f**king racket.

And somehow, underneath all that fuzz, it’s still strangely warm, melodic and occasionally quite beautiful.

That’s always been the trick with Dinosaur Jr.

They sound like the rehearsal room is on fire, but J’s mildly concerned about a girl he spoke to in 1987.

Anyway.

There Near is out.

Turn it up until something in the house vibrates that probably shouldn’t.

Then turn it up one more notch.
