Did you know that although women hold 52% of Australia’s driver’s licences, our crash-test dummies are still “mini-men”—scaled-down male models that bear little anatomical relevance to female bodies?

Men and women differ in fat distribution, musculature and bone structure. Women also sit closer to the steering wheel and dashboard and are more prone to whiplash—yet all our safety data comes from male-pattern dummies.

Perhaps this explains why, even though men crash more often, women suffer more serious injuries. Soon, though, that will change. ANCAP’s new small-female dummy—Thor—stands 1.5 m tall, weighs 47.5 kg, features a female-shaped pelvis and breasts, and is fitted with 150 sensors to record impacts where women are most vulnerable.

With data from Thor, carmakers can finally calibrate airbags and seatbelts for women’s bodies—helping to reduce the serious injuries that “mini-men” dummies have missed.

We owe this shift to author-activist Caroline Criado Perez, whose book Invisible Women exposed “one-size-fits-men” design failures, and to Sweden’s National Road and Transport Research Institute, which developed the first fully female dummy in 2023.

Female Thor will join ANCAP’s crash-test family in 2026—about time for half of Australia’s drivers.

I love being in the right place at the right time!

This trio found their ute with a dead flat tyre on their return from 2 weeks holiday in Bali. Broken-down at 9:30pm in a gated car-park at Brisbane Airport. What a welcome home! 🥹

As I approached my car, which they had blocked in with their broken-down ute, they asked "You don't happen to have a tyre pump, do you?"

I grinned and said "Mate, today is your lucky day!"

8 minutes later, we were all on our way!
