Terra Tots Tales

Terra Tots Tales Hi! I’m Jess, a teacher, mum and the heart behind Terra Tots. I love writing stories that my children and children like them can truly relate to.

I believe in creating stories where kids can see themselves and their everyday adventures on the page.

Pre-kids, I always halved the recommended track times.

Post-kids? We multiply them by 4 😂

I love listening to their imaginations run wild in wild places.

For a good half hour, these two caught fish (bark) with their rods (sticks), before moving on to pushing out their “Row, Row Boats” - bigger pieces of bark floating down the creek.

There’s something special about outdoor play, children can turn the simplest things into whole worlds of imagination!

What have your little ones dreamed up in nature lately?

Let them stop to listen to that shell.
Let them stop to brush sand with that feather.
Let them stop to pick up that dead urchin.

Watching a creek work its way to the ocean is a pretty good way to understand erosion.

New project sketches are well underway and my chief designer is developing the colour palette ❤️

Lots of inspo from the kids in this one (like all of them 😂). Mia has loved reading maps this year and is often drawing them to help us navigate to our next adventure.

Yesterday's backyard activity was carrot-top pesto!

We picked lemons, spring onions and carrot-tops from the garden. Mia helped trim away the thick carrot-top stems. Archie's important job was popping ice into the bowl of water while we blanched the carrot-tops. They loved swishing the carrot tops around in the icy water and drying them.

Mia declared it "so yummy" whilst mixing although I'm certain this will just be my lunch tomorrow BUT... that doesn't matter, they spent ages touching, tasting, picking, chopping, popping and mixing and learning about what food looks like before it arrives in our supermarkets.

I'm not about to start posting lots of recipes but this is the nature play I love - simple, practical, a little messy and connected to the world around us.

Save the recipe and make it yourself!

Transcript: Child one: "Tip in!" Child two: "I made orange!"🌋

We had to ride to the shops to buy even more bicarb and vinegar - the kids LOVED this one!

This volcano consisted of 6 different activities across 7 craft sessions:

Activity 1: Building the base! We taped a cup onto a box and scrunched up used drawing paper to create the shape and secured it all with masking tape on a baking tray.

Activity 2: Paper-mache time! This took two full days of messy fun with a drying day in between.

Activity 3: Nature walk to collect native paperbark.

Activity 4: Salad spinner art! We spun the paperbark with big dollops of paint right in the centre.

Activity 5: Layering and sticking our colourful paperbark onto the volcano.

Activity 6: The big bicarb and vinegar eruption you see in the video!

I get so excited about opening book mail - especially when it contains a print proof!

And then feel a little bummed when I notice something that needs fixing... can you see it?
