Last Saturday night we were able to get along and check out local legends Ocean Sleeper. The Gippsland based band have been together since 2016 and have been gaining momentum ever since.
In 2017, Brad (and Diverse AV - also from Gippsland), started working with the band, handling their video for the festival circuit and boosting their live performances. Brad and Karl Spiessl (Lead Vocals and Frontman) struck up a great relationship and the rest is history!

For this latest tour, Brad engaged Ruben Laine to join the crew utilising his extensive lighting and video skills to round out the team. Brad says ‘they wanted to beef this show up and Ruben was the perfect fit’.

We were lucky enough to chat with Ruben who said: ‘It was a great creative experience, I love how open minded the band. From extending and building suspense during the changeover to letting me experiment with unusual color combinations to avoid abusing the blue and red palettes that is a common colour combination in the metal world. The band is not afraid to push boundaries and experiment, which is unusual for a growing band, normally at this stage in a bands lifecycle they tend to land on safer and almost formulaic choices’.
Ruben was using an Avolites D9-215 for this tour as well as his Ai Media platform connecting with the awesome set up supplied by Brad and the team.
Combination of all production elements was excellent.

The whole tour has been brilliantly supported by multiple companies across all the starts and venues through the tour.

Up next in our Social Spotlight series, is one of our favourite people from across the pond. He is a long time Avolites user, the proud owner of the first D7-215 in Tasmania, as well as installing the first D3-110 at Elizabeth College in Hobart. He’s an awesome designer and brilliant human, introducing.. Mr Gareth Kay’s !! 🎉🎉👏🏼👏🏼🥳🥳

I’m Gareth Kays; I’m the owner and creative director of ‘GK Productions’ based in Hobart. I handle all the day to day admin, plus I lead my team out in the field. I also design all the large theatre productions we do.
My passion has always been musical theatre, I’ve always enjoyed it, but from a creative perspective, it’s being able to do something scripted knowing what’s coming next and creating those magic moments.

I was 10 years old when I was involved in my first theatrical production with a youth drama group, I assisted with backstage, before taking on the audio and lighting duties not long after.
I was first introduced to Avolites by the former Tassie production company ‘Production Works’ while at college. I ended up working there for 12 years running their lighting department. They had just purchased a Pearl 2000 Rollercue and a Sapphire 2000, having just sold their Diamon 3.
The first product I purchased was a Titan Mobile, I still use it as a backup. I often program smaller shows we do on a console and then leave a Titan Mobile in place for an operator. During the production week I network a Mobile or T3 to either our D7-215 or Quartz consoles allowing me to do fixes on the fly while the operator manages the cuing.
Avolites just makes sense to me. The first computerised console I used was an ETC Express 48/96, I knew it very well, but control of moving lights was very much an afterthought. I find Avolites so intuitive, no need for memorising syntax or numerous modifier key shortcuts. There are so many ways to operate the console, and once you’ve learnt the basics of Titan you can follow the same process to undertake many more complex operations.

Another shout out to Mr Dan Saveski and his shiny new D3-110. They are Live at The MCG in Melbourne as we type this! The NFL showcase has proven to be a big hit and it’s brilliant to see an Avolites User/console at the helm.
These little consoles continue to punch up, it’s super exciting to see them out in the wild.

What a way to end the week! Friday night shout out to Mr Daniel Saveski!

Over the last few months, Dan has been road testing the whole range of Avolites consoles on various gigs across the country, and he recently purchased himself a T3 (pc based controller).
Today, in an exciting turn of events, he purchased himself a shiny new Avolites D3-110! Whoop whoop!

Dan is now the first person in Victoria with a D3-110 console. It’s awesome to see these little beasts starting to make a name for themselves! 🥑🍓

Dan already has big plans for his newest edition and we’re so excited to see what’s to come.
So keep your eyes peeled friends. Exciting adventures are afoot.

Over the last few months we’ve been making new friends from all parts of the industry. One of which is Rohan Thornton who (amongst other projects), works with the team on The Front Bar at Channels 7.

Rohan was looking for a new console to replace previous setup (shout out to Clarity, we thank you for your service 💖).
So we introduced Rohan to the Avolites T3 console and Wing. Last night for the first time, the powerful yet compact combo ran the show (with Clarity on back up one final time).
It’s a sad but also exciting time. We know it’s a big thing to change a console when you’ve used one brand for a long time. It’s a huge investment to commit to but with a platform like Avo… you can , and more folks are seeing this everyday!

We are obsessed, thank you Rohan for sharing your console adventures with us. Onwards and Upwards!

What an epic few weeks we’ve had with new friends!

On July 3rd we spent the day with the Arts Centre Melbourne Technical trainees, going through all things Avolites, from set up to pack down and everything in between. Such an awesome group of people, what a bonus for the communities they are based in.

And this week we have spent our time at St Stephen’s School in Duncraig, WA. Where we have run the full Avolites Academy (ANZ), levels 1 and 2. And again we have been blessed with a room full of superstars.
I feel bad calling it work, when it’s this much fun!

Huge thanks to both Arts centre Melbourne and St Stephen’s School for having us along, such a pleasure to be able to bring Avolites training to more folks around Australia.
