𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧!
Big news for Top End billabong fishers, Four Mile Hole in Kakadu is open from today, 27 August! It’s looking great after a good flush. Check out the latest photos in the comments.
Access via Two Mile Hole Road to the Four Mile Hole turnoff is open under traffic management. Rangers have reinstalled the toilet, and the wash-down bay will be installed on Monday.
Please use the wash-down facility to remove w**ds from boats and trailers, and check carefully for salvinia before leaving, especially if heading to other billabongs such as Corroboree, which remains free of this invasive w**d. Let’s help keep it that way.
A heads-up for launching: Water levels are still high and the entire ramp remains submerged. You’ll need to reverse a little further than usual and be aware of a noticeable “bump” as you pass over the head of the ramp.
Parks Australia has advised that Two Mile Hole will unfortunately not open this season due to flood damage and ongoing roadworks. The longer-term positive is that new culverts are being installed, which should make the road more resilient to flooding and could allow Two Mile Hole to open earlier in future seasons.
Good fishing reports are also coming from Corroboree and Hardies, while more of Kakadu’s famous billabongs are now open, including Red Lily, Bucket and Alligator.
As of last weekend, there were also roadworks on the Arnhem Highway around Beatrice Hill, with sections operating under one-way traffic control. Take care, follow the signage and allow a little extra time. AFANT has made inquiries with NT Logistics and Infrastructure and hope to provide more information soon.
With Four Mile Hole opening and more billabongs becoming accessible, it’s shaping up to be a great build-up fishing season in the Top End.
A big thanks to Parks Australia & Kakadu National Park staff for their ongoing communication and updates, and to the rangers and contractors working to get sites open after what was reported as the biggest flooding to hit Kakadu since 1974.
