The benefits of professional security

Over the past eight weeks I’ve been sharing tips on keeping celebrations safe. Private parties are our specialty, and today I wanted to explain why our approach is very different from generic security providers.

Our work starts well before the first guest arrives.

Every event begins with a comprehensive pre-party assessment of your home or venue. We identify potential risks, discuss your plans, and develop strategies to help prevent problems before they occur.

Where appropriate, we encourage parties to be registered with Victoria Police, and we maintain communication throughout the event if circumstances change:
Guest numbers can grow unexpectedly, alcohol consumption can increase, weather can deteriorate, or additional support may suddenly be needed.

Every security team member receives a detailed event briefing, prior to the event outlining the risks, emergency procedures and their individual responsibilities.

Why our team is different…

⁃ Experienced male and female teams.

⁃ Many of our staff are former law enforcement professionals or have extensive community liaison experience.

⁃ All team members hold Working With Children Checks, First Aid qualifications and RSA certification.

⁃ Every staff member has been trained and mentored within U-Nome Security for many years—you won’t find inexperienced guards turning up to your event.

⁃ Our staff don’t stand around in high-visibility uniforms looking intimidating. That’s simply not our style. Instead, they are friendly, approachable and welcoming to your guests while remaining quietly observant and highly proactive.

⁃ They arrive early, inspect the venue, liaise with the host and position themselves where they can effectively monitor arrivals and the surrounding area. Trouble is much easier to prevent when you’re actively watching, not sitting inside.

One of the biggest advantages of experience is recognising the early warning signs. A small group gathering down the street can quickly become a much larger crowd if left unchecked. Our staff are trained to identify these indicators early, communicate with the host and, if necessary, contact emergency services before a situation escalates.

In many cases, a simple police drive-by is enough to deter unwanted visitors and prevent gatecrashers altogether.

Our role doesn’t finish when the music stops.

We remain on site as guests leave because this is often when issues can arise. We assist with safe departures, transport arrangements where needed, and help ensure everyone gets home safely.

Throughout the evening, we work alongside the host, providing support so you can enjoy your own celebration instead of worrying about what might happen next.

Our goal has always been simple:

The Importance of Female Security within any type of asset protection.

As an Australian-owned, female-owned and operated security company- a rarity in our industry- I continue to be surprised that many security providers still deploy all-male teams to events.

In today’s environment, there is simply no reason why every security assignment should not include at least one female security officer.

I have 30 years risk experience, policing, security, investigations and community safety
I work at the Coal Face and see firsthand the difference female staff make

Female security professionals often:

-De-escalate conflict calmly and effectively.
-Are less likely to be perceived as intimidating or threatening.
-Build trust quickly with guests who may be anxious, distressed or vulnerable.
-Notice subtle changes in behaviour and emotional wellbeing that can prevent incidents from escalating.
-Provide reassurance to women, children, older people and families who may feel more comfortable approaching another female.

With the increasing number of people affected by family violence, sexual assault and trauma, security is no longer just about managing conflict-it is also about recognising vulnerability and responding appropriately.

It is not uncommon for someone attending a wedding, funeral, private function or community event to disclose experiences of family violence or sexual assault after they begin talking with one of our female officers. Many tell us they simply felt safer approaching a woman.

Every member of the U-nome security team-both female and male- is trained to respond professionally and compassionately. Where appropriate, we can provide immediate information about support services, including referrals to Orange Door, or staff contact me directly so I can follow up and connect the person with appropriate assistance.

This is not about suggesting women are better security officers than men. The strongest security teams are diverse teams. Male and female officers each bring different strengths, perspectives and communication styles that complement one another.

Within my security firm mixed security teams are not an optional extra-they are best practice.

Security today is about much more than having a physical presence. It is about protecting people, recognising risk early, communicating effectively and ensuring every guest feels safe enough to seek help if they need it. It is about providing a holistic approach!

The most difficult job in security can be controlling entry !

After more than
20 years in the security industry and before that serving as a police member responding to assaults at venues, retail outlets and parties, I can confidently say this:

Entry control is where safety begins

People often think security is about dealing with problems once they’ve happened. The reality is our job is to stop those problems from happening in the first place.

At the entry, we’re assessing far more than just who’s on the guest list. We’re looking at:
# Sobriety – because the last thing anyone wants is a guest becoming intoxicated or requiring medical attention. Once they’re inside, that responsibility sits with the host ( duty of care )
and proof of age – ensuring guests are who they say they are.
troublemakers from entering before they become everyone’s problem.

That’s why every pre party assessment I conduct includes a ‘walk through’ your property with you and developing a practical entry plan.

We’ll discuss:
*The safest entry point – front door, garage or side gate.
*Managing guest arrivals and departures safely.
*Why we don’t recommend excessive decorations at the front of your property.
*Lighting, visibility and supervision.
*Risks such as steep driveways, poor weather or trip hazards.
*A guest management and risk plan tailored to your event.

I’ve previously spoken about the importance of a well-managed guest list. Effective entry control is the next piece of the puzzle in creating a safe, enjoyable event for everyone.

Where appropriate, we also ensure police are aware of larger events, and if any issues arise, we’ll liaise with them promptly.

🎉 THE GUEST LIST – Accuracy = safety and success for your teenage party!

For more than 20 years I have been supporting parents and hosts to plan safe, successful parties from start to finish.

Before that, I spent years responding in the police divvy van to out-of-control teenage parties. There were plenty of nights attending gatecrashes, breaking up fights and, occasionally, even being pelted with stubbies.

That experience gave me an important insight:

Parents don’t need judgement. They need support.

For 20 years we have been supporting parents navigate the path of planning young people’s celebrations!!

As a mum myself, I understand how challenging it is raising teenagers, particularly in today’s world of social media, Snapchat invitations and parties spreading online within minutes.

So here are some of my most important tips when developing the guest list for a teenage party:

# Keep the guest list to people your child genuinely knows. If they don’t know their last name, they probably aren’t close friends.

We are not there to create a negative vibe at your child’s party.

Unfortunately, many people picture security staff arriving dressed like nightclub bouncers. That isn’t how we work. Professional, experienced security blends into the event, builds rapport with young people and keeps everyone safe without becoming the centre of attention.

The reality is that cutting corners for security to save money can often result in inexperienced bouncers , unnecessary confrontation and a party ending badly.

Teenage parties don’t have to be stressful.

With the right planning, good communication and experienced support, your child can enjoy an amazing celebration while parents can relax knowing everyone is safe.

Parent Supervision – The Importance of Reliable Helpers

Since 2006, we have been providing specialised support for youth parties, helping parents from the initial planning stages right through to the completion of the event.

One of the most important factors in a successful party is having reliable, sober parent helpers. We work on a ratio of one parent helper for every 25 young people invited

As part of our complimentary pre-party assessment, we visit your home prior to the event to walk through the plan with parents and, often, the young person celebrating the occasion. This allows everyone to understand their roles and responsibilities before the big day.

Parent helpers play an important role during the event, and specific tasks and expectations are discussed during the assessment.

We strongly recommend confirming your parent support team at least 7 days prior to the event. If helpers become unavailable at the last minute, it can significantly impact the safety and success of the party.

🥳TOP 10 SAFETY TIPS FOR HOSTING A TEEN PARTY 🥳

Planning a party for your child? A little preparation can make all the difference. Here are my top safety tips for parents:

1. Keep guest numbers manageable -ideally under 100 and limited to people you know.

2. Decide on a suitable venue early – whether it’s at home or a hired hall.

3. Have parent helpers available – a good guide is 1 responsible adult for every 25 guests.

4. Manage alcohol responsibly – whether alcohol is supplied or BYO, ensure it is supervised by RSA-qualified family members or professional staff.

5. Notify local police at least one week prior to the event.

6. Let your neighbours know at least one week beforehand to avoid surprises and complaints.

7. Request RSVPs at least two weeks before the party.

8. Pay attention to delays in receiving the guest list from your child. This can sometimes indicate numbers are growing well beyond what was originally discussed.

9. Consider professional security. If that’s not within budget, arrange a pre-party safety assessment. I’m happy to discuss options and provide advice.

10. Provide plenty of substantial food and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the event.

Remember: The best parties are the ones where everyone has a great time and gets home safely.

One of the reasons why I attend your home or venue for the pre party assessment is to ensure you as the host provide duty of care which equals a safe environment for everyone attending your home -

We provide pre party risk assessment so what does this mean ? To ensure minimal visits from gatectrashers I attend your home, gather information on likely hood of unwanted guests, do research in regards to the venue / area and establish how often unwanted guests attend events and cause problems
Once I have this information I will the assign staff based on risk

What makes our team different is our specialised experience working at youth parties, family events and private functions.

All of our staff are experienced supervisors who have been specifically trained to work in youth party environments. Every team member holds a current Working With Children Check, providing parents and hosts with additional peace of mind.

Many of our staff have backgrounds in law enforcement and bring extensive experience in communication, conflict resolution and risk management. We also ensure our teams are mixed gender, allowing us to engage effectively with a diverse range of guests and situations.

Prior to every event, a detailed risk assessment is completed. This allows our staff to understand the unique requirements of the venue, guest demographics and any identified concerns. Comprehensive pre-event briefings ensure our team arrives prepared and informed.

Our approach is low-key, professional and family-focused. Guests are greeted warmly and respectfully. We are not interested in creating an intimidating atmosphere. Instead, we focus on building rapport, maintaining visibility and helping events run smoothly.

Communication is another key factor in event safety. Our teams maintain ongoing communication throughout the event and, when required, liaise directly with Victoria Police and emergency services to ensure any concerns are addressed promptly and professionally.

A message to hosts and parents planning parties and events:

Recently, a parent contacted us to provide security for an 18th birthday party. After conducting a full physical assessment of the venue and event, we agreed on a responsible approach to alcohol management to help ensure the safety of all guests.

A week later, we were informed that the plan had changed - alcohol would be made freely available with no limits, and security would simply “step in if fights broke out.”

Unfortunately, if that is the expectation, we cannot assist.

Our priority is providing a safe environment for our staff, guests, and everyone attending the event. Hosts also have a duty of care to ensure their event is managed responsibly.

Security should never be treated as a “clean up crew” for preventable situations caused by poor planning or irresponsible alcohol service.

We are committed to helping you create a safe, professional, and enjoyable event -not a disaster waiting to happen.
