I want to share something that's been sitting on my heart for a while, and I think it needs to be said — gently, but honestly.
When you visit a weekend market and make comments like "this location is terrible", "there are so many empty stalls", or "this market is dying" — please know that the vendors right there in front of you can hear you. And it hurts more than you might realise.
We have no control over where the market is. We didn't pick the suburb, the carpark, or the layout. What we do have control over is showing up — every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday — setting up our stalls, putting our heart into our displays, and hoping that today is the day more people walk through.
For a lot of us, this isn't just a hobby. It's our income. It's hours of making, planning, packing, and unpacking. It's the thing we do because we love it and because we believe in it. But when visitors arrive already expecting it to be a disappointment, it makes an already tough gig feel impossible.
And those empty stalls? They're not there because vendors don't care. They're there because without consistent foot traffic and community support, it becomes really hard to justify the cost of showing up week after week.
Here's the truth: markets thrive when people come. When you bring your family, tell your friends, share a post, and buy something handmade from a real person who made it with their hands — you are directly keeping that market alive.
So if you love having local markets in your community — please show up for them. Come for a browse. Grab a coffee. Pick up a little something made with love. Your support genuinely changes things.
