🌸 K A N Z A S H I 🌸
Kanzashi is the term given to traditional decorative Japanese hairpins, often embellished with flowers made from elaborately folded, then stitched squares of fabric.
This clever Kanzashi Flower template, along with others in a series by Clover, lets you create perfectly folded, gathered and stitched petals, making a flower that can be used for many creative pursuits. Each template comes with full instructions, so you can acquire the skill of making these flowers at your own pace.
Here I’m using the Large Gathered Petal Template, finished off with a covered button of French and Colonial Knots.
If you live in Australia, you can find these Clover templates on my web site (link in the bio), or your local stockist of Clover Products.

💛 Happy Wattle Day Friends!💛
Here in Australia, September 1 is the day we honour our floral emblem, the Golden Wattle.
It also coincides with the coming of Spring, with bushland full of beautiful wattle blooms.
Here are some interesting facts about wattle:
💛 Australia has over 1000 native species of wattle;
💛Wattles are in symbiosis with bacteria that lives in nodules on its roots - these fix nitrogen from the air into the soil, helping to fertilise the soil for other plants;
💛First Nations people used the roasted seeds to make a nutrient-rich flour;
💛The flat leaves of many wattles are not leaves at all! They’re called phyllodes, which are a type of flattened stem, designed to minimise water loss.

Here I’ve embroidered a small sprig of flowering wattle using Turkey Stitch for the flowers, a hand-painted background, and an embroidered detached leaf for extra dimension, all using stranded cottons.

Here’s Part 2 of what “The Loome” tool can help you create.
These two techniques are favourites of mine - here I’m using Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in colours Goldenrod and Terracotta.
The little woven bands can be used for so many applications - bracelets, bookmarks, key-rings, or embellishments for larger projects. And the little tassels - how cute! Earrings perhaps?
This handy tool is in stock on the web site now Friends - link in the bio.
Stay tuned for Part 3 🤗✨♥️!

One Tool, so many possibilities 🥰✨.
This is part one of a series of reels showcasing the versatility of this clever little tool - The Loome.
Here I’m using the Loome tool as a Lucet, or Knitting Fork. Depending on whether you use a figure-of-eight looping motion, or a side-to-side rotating motion, a loose thick braid, or a thin, firm square-sided braid can be made. The contrast with these samples is amazing - both were made using one thickness of malabrigo Rasta in the colour Sunset.
Stay tuned for part two … can you guess what the Loome tool will make next?
Happy Creating ✨.

Winter Dreams…fallen leaves, birdsong, rose hips and misty mornings ✨♥️
🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂

Here I’m using Fiori’s Merino/Silk 8 ply blend to cover a timber bead in needle-lace. Loving the bent-tipped needle 🥰♥️✨!

Ah, the fresh scent of citrus 🍋‍🟩 ☺️.
The inspiration to create something can come from almost anywhere, wouldn’t you agree? Inspired by this pretty paper, as well as the laden lemon tree in my garden is as good a reason to sew as any 😊.
Here I’m using a Tilda pattern, featured in the book “Sunshine Sewing”, along with some Tilda fabrics from my stash.

There’s nothing quite so satisfying as a knitted swatch…
especially when it hits the required gauge!
I never used to be a knitter of gauge swatches (risky business, I know), but with age-earned wisdom 😜 (and a few ill-fitting knits), I’ve finally embraced the full-time use of a gauge swatch with a full heart 🤗♥️.
Are you a knitter of gauge swatches, or are you more of a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-(knitted)-pants knitter?
Here I’m using a gauge to check a swatch of Rasta in colour Cosmos (both in stock now Friends).

Who’s up for some Nuno Felting 🤗?
Here’s a fun wet felting technique to try: Nuno Felting involves layering carded wool between fabric layers to create an interesting ripple textured fabric. You can experiment with different fabrics - here I’m using the cotton muslin that I ice-dyed a couple of reels ago.
Here are the steps:
✨cut two pieces of fabric (allowing for shrinkage - my piece shrank by about 20%);
✨lay out a clean towel, a layer of bubble wrap, then place one of the fabric pieces on top;
✨pull fine layers from your carded wool, and lay on top of your fabric, slightly overlapping, all going in the one direction;
✨place a piece of tulle on top, then apply slightly soapy warm water, dampening all the wool. I’m using an old plastic bag to add the water;
✨remove the tulle, then apply another fine layer of carded wool, this time in the opposite direction. You’ll notice that I left part of the fabric free of the wool - this part will remain unfelted;
✨place tulle on top again, moisten again with the soapy water, making sure all layers are wet (but not overly so)!
✨use the plastic bag to gently rub on top of the layers (with tulle still in place). Keep doing this, rotating and turning your work over occasionally to ensure even felting;
✨once the wool fibres have started to mesh with the fabric, remove the tulle, tightly roll the bubble wrap and layers together, then roll firmly. A piece of non-slip mat is useful here. Again, rotate your work to ensure even felting and keep an eye on it - once the felting kicks in, your fabric can shrink fast;
✨when you’re happy with the amount of shrinkage, and the texture of your fabric, throw your bundled felted fabric onto your work surface a few times, then rinse in tepid water, gently squeezing out the excess water, before pulling your felted fabric back into shape, letting it dry on a clean towel.
Experimenting with different fabrics can yield all sorts of interesting results - the felted fabric can be embellished with embroidery, beading, needle felting, or can be used to make garments and accessories.
Happy Creating Friends 🥰✨
