🦕 🐚🪸🪾Fossil Specking Bag🪾🪸🐚🦕

Highlighting one of the beautiful fossils you may find in our bags. Pipi's are a type of clam native to Australia and are found fossilised in Lightning Ridge. Here are some fun facts about them :

🐚 1. They’re fossilised freshwater shells
Even though we call them “pipi,” most Lightning Ridge specimens are actually freshwater bivalves, not the ocean pipis you’d find on Australian beaches today.
🌈 2. Some are fully opalised, others are partial
You’ll find a mix of:
Fully replaced opal shells (solid gem)
Shells with opal infill inside
Plain fossil shells sitting in opal-bearing rock
The fully opalised ones are the rarest and most valuable.
💎 3. They can display stunning colour play
Just like gem opal, some pipis show:
Bright reds (the rarest and most valuable)
Greens and blues
Rolling flashes of colour across the shell ridges
The natural ribbed texture of the shell can make the colour look even more dynamic.
⏳ 4. They’re around 100 million years old
These shells date back to the Early Cretaceous period, when the Lightning Ridge area was covered in rivers and wetlands rather than dry outback.
🔍 5. Fine details are often preserved
In high-quality specimens, you can still see:
Growth lines, Ribbing patterns & Shell symmetry.
Some look almost like a modern shell—just turned into opal.
⛏️ 6. Miners often find them by accident
Most opalised pipis are uncovered during regular opal mining. Many are found:
In mullock heaps (discarded mining material)
Broken or in pieces
Perfect, intact shells are much harder to come by.
🧬 7. They formed through silica replacement
The process:
The shell gets buried in sediment
Silica-rich water seeps in
The original material dissolves and is replaced with opal
Sometimes the inside fills first, creating a hollow opal cast.
🇦🇺 8. They’re uniquely Australian treasures
Opalised shell fossils like these are strongly associated with Australia, especially Lightning Ridge, making them highly collectible worldwide.
🎁 9. Each one is completely unique
No two opalised pipis are the same:
Different shapes
Different colour patterns
Different levels of preservation

🌈✨ Why Buy an Opal Necklace? Because No One Else Will Ever Have Yours. ✨🌈

Every Australian opal tells its own story. Hidden inside each stone is a burst of colour that dances in the light — flashes of blue, green, gold, pink and sometimes even fiery red. 💎

Unlike mass-produced jewellery, no two opals are ever the same. When you wear an opal necklace, you're wearing a completely unique piece of nature that took millions of years to form. 🌏
