Originally built in 1938, this Art Deco theatre served as a popular destination for decades, but eventually fell into disrepair and was abandoned in the 1980s. In 1995, the theatre undertook an extensive restoration and renovation project to bring the theatre back to its former glory. Today, the Sun Theatre is going strong, showcasing a mix of blockbuster films and independent cinema. It’s history and stunning architecture continue to draw visitors from all over the world.

Northcote Theatre was built in 1912 and was originally a picture theatre. It has been said to be Melbourne’s first building to be lighted by electricity. The cinema closed in 1960 and in recent years has been used as a Reception and functions venue under the names Regal Ballroom and Fani’s Receptions. In 2022 Northcote Theatre reopened and relaunched as a 1500 capacity live music venue. The new owners have restored it while considering its original character. A beautiful landmark off Northcote’s High Street.

The Palais Theatre, formerly the Palais Pictures, opened in 1927. Situated next to Luna Park, the Palais helped establish the St Kilda beach foreshore as an entertainment precinct, and remains an iconic landmark in the area. Typical of 1920s picture theatres, the architectural style is ornate, eclectic and exotic. The theatre operated primarily as a cinema until the 1950s. The Palais has since become increasingly popular as a live performance venue for touring artists.

Originally the State Theatre, this beauty was built in 1929 and designed by American architect John Eberson. When the theatre opened it had the largest seating capacity in Australia, holding 3371 people. Since 1962 it has been named the Forum Theatre, where it has been used exclusively for concerts and large scale performances since 1995, all performing under the iconic cerulean sky. Today the Forum is a very loved and iconic landmark of Melbourne with its prominent architecture and preserved presence. It is one theatre where the internal design is just as special as the external.

The Balwyn Theatre opened in 1930 with a seating capacity of 1,800 in stalls and circle levels. The offering featured foot heaters and 200 large 'lounge chairs' or 'cuddle seats' for couples. The first impressions of the art deco theatre were of space, colour and luxury. The construction of the new theatre gave rise to the Whitehorse Road shopping precinct, with new lots zoned for commercial use. Today Balwyn Theatre exists under the Palace umbrella, serving films to the good people of Balwyn.
