The PB-MPC tool is more than 16,000(!) lines of code and counting, written just for the purpose of making and designing better mouthpieces. The reason we did this is because our tool allows us to use mathematics and impedence modelling to acoustically optimise a mouthpiece. The tool allows us to model a typical instrument such as a Bach 37 Bb trumpet, and to adjust specific aspects of the mouthpiece to improve the way those peaks align with we where the partials should of be. This improves intonation, response, resonance, slotting etc.
We can also keep parameters contstant. For example, if we know you are playing our #7 backbore with a specific top, we can keep the backbore as a fixed constant and only optimise aspect of the cup.
This tool is still in the early days of its development, but in time will hopefully be a huge step forward for a scientific, acoustically-informed approach to mouthpieces, rather than just the usual trial and error
A future version will allow us to take a sonic (Impulse Response) sample of the player's instrument and get the sonic signature of the player themselves, and include that in the optimisation parameters. This can even be done remotely! If we have a known mouthpiece, we can use some diy testing to determine the impedence curve of the mouthpiece+instrument and separate out the instrument. Once we have that, we can use some playing samples of the player to determine the players upstream input impedence and lip parameters (mass, stiffness and damping).
Once we have that information, we can create player-specific optimisations that are based on acoustic science and real-world testing.
That's where this is all heading, one line of code at a time.
Even though right now, we're just one person desigining and making mouthpieces, every sale, every shared social post, every bit of word-of-mouth support helps get us to where we want to be sooner.
