Interesting article from the ABC release this morning
“Supermarkets [want] to really consolidate … make it as cheap as possible for them to provide those products REGARDLESS of whether or not it is best with respect to local supply chains and local growers.”
The major players in the Australian supermarket game are continuing to find ways to bring their expenditure down, often spruiking it as a way to deliver cheaper prices to customers.
The reality, though, is that squeezing costs out of the supply chain can come at a cost to the suppliers and growers producing our food, while major companies remain under constant pressure to deliver returns to shareholders.
Here at Jointly Harvest, we are committed to bringing you fresh fruit, veg and produce in a way that finds a better balance for everyone involved.
That means starting local wherever we can.
We want to support local growers and producers, pay fair prices for quality produce, reduce the number of unnecessary steps between the farm and your kitchen, and still provide our members with genuinely good value.
Sometimes that means sourcing from elsewhere in Victoria, or elsewhere in Australia, because seasonality and availability mean local is not always possible. But our priority remains the same: local first, Victorian second, Australian always.
We don’t believe the cheapest possible supply chain is necessarily the best one.
We believe there should be room for the grower to make a fair living, for customers to receive fresh, high-quality produce at a fair price, and for more of the money spent on food to remain within the communities that produce it.
That’s the balance we’re continuing to work towards at Jointly Harvest.
Better food. Shorter supply chains. Stronger local growers. And a model that works for everyone.
