Hello it's Ren with a video of Mable and her brood. I thought you might like this. Its Autumn and time to ramp up the protein that they need for growing new feathers if they are coming out of a moult. Todays scrumptious meal includes laying pellets, mixed grains with sunflower seeds, and cooked rice with raw egg mashed through it egg shells and all. Why buy grit when you can keep their egg shells and feed the crushed shells back to them to keep the shell on the laid eggs strong. At the end of the day they get more scraps.

Chicken Feeders DIY
I have made a lot of different chicken feeders. Here are two of my first feeders.
You need to decide what is right for you.

This plastic tub has some holes cut out with some plumbers elbows fitted.

There are many ways to cut the holes including jigsaws and circular cutters for door furniture like the one pictured.

Once you have cut the hole and fitted the elbow silicone it in place and leave it for 24 hours to set before using. It is tricky to cut as you need just the right saw speed and a firm hand so the plastic does not shatter if you have thin plastic.

If you are using 60 and 200 liter drums the plastic is quite thick so the plastic doesn't shatter. Get a guy with a strong sturdy hand to do it if you are nervous about it ladies.

This is one of the few ways I have found of feeding chickens where the feed does not go all over the ground. Because as you know if there is anyway to spill the food all over the ground chickens have it down to a fine art.

There are many feeders you can make using plumbing fittings get creative and show others what you can do.

Unwanted Roosters.
I take unwanted roosters that are crowing and over 5 months old. Most go in the pot. If you want your rooster to continue to be a pet - do not contact us - please advertise him and say not for the pot.
Roosters that come to us: only a few get used for breeding. Standard size only at this time (no bantams.) I know people struggle with unwanted roosters hence the reason for my post. This is a helpful post for those that require it and can appreciate it.
Please msg me. We cannot take smaller roosters as they would not survive the paddock with the big boys and also they would not survive the harsh winter weather. We have tried taking back Silkie roosters and have had only one little tough nut survive that we admire daily. Hence the conditions. We can only do what is fair and kind for the roosters. I hope you understand. I like to help those people that can appreciate the help. I am here for you if you are in that category.
How it works.
I will give my partners number you can text him and he will text you a time when he is doing the next rooster return. He wont answer you immediately he will answer a day or two before his next scheduled rooster return. It is sometimes weekly and sometimes fortnightly depending what our commitments are. Sometimes we are away - enjoying the countryside and you will need to wait till we get back.
OK and this P.S. For the few (2 and 1/2 percent) who feel I am up to something sinister or shady and just like to accuse people of things in their msg. I keep spare roosters for all my breeds in the paddock. The other roosters go to others for Sunday lunch - I haven't got around to killing them for my own lunch yet as I don't have the time. I will eventually get to this when the predicted food shortage created by our deceitful leaders happens. If you feel this is not Ok don't bother leaving a reply no one on my site is interested - they are all kind and intelligent people. I sometimes have to call a spade a spade to put the natterers to rest. Naysayers not wlecome on this site.

NEW BREED OF CHICKEN
Retired biochemist Dr Gil Stokes spent seven years in Tasmania in the region of Quamby developing a dual-purpose chook from the English Sussex and New Hampshire breeds.
The Quamby hen can lay up to 300 eggs a year and roosters are good eating even at 10 months of age
Breeders across the country are growing the Quamby for release to backyard farmers.
I have spent the last 6 months growing up my flock of Quambys and they are very close to point of lay so very shortly we will have some Quamby chicks coming through. Msg me if you would like to go on the waiting list to be one of the first.

Look what we have at the moment!!! Cute as cute can be.

When they are sleeping they totally flop and look like little melted marshmallows.

We have more than we need so tell your friends if they are looking for chicks. Tell them to msg or call me.

These will all grow up to be good layers.
They are a mixture of New Hampshire, Cream Leg bar, Leghorn and Isa Brown hens with Isa brown and New Hampshire rooster.

My Favorite Coccidiosis Medicine for Chickens Is Coccivet.

I have had a sick chick or two. I put Handee towels on top of my brooder plates. And change it a few times a day. I say to my husband I'm changing the babies nappies. Having a paper towel on top of the brooder plate makes it easy to spot blood.

If there is blood in the stool or if you have a leaf green stool your chicken has coccidiosis. Without one of these Coccidiostat's your chick or chicken will usually die.

Follow the instructions on the bottle.

I like coccivet for the little chicks because they are usually fixed in 3-5 days. I order it online but you can usually get it at your local pet store. This is an item that should be in your chicken first aid cupboard or tub. I have a tub with every medicine I could possible need for a chicken. When you have a lot of chicks you don't want to mucking around for weeks trying to get a medicine they need right away..

I use the Cocciprol or Amprolium when I am not at the paddock every day. Because the medicine only gets given every fourth day if my memory serves me correctly. So, that is great for my large birds and you do it for about 2 weeks. 'Different horses for different courses.' What suits one person may not suit another. So pick the one that suits you. The 3-5 day one or the 2 week one.

I find after a big rain that the parasite comes to the surface and the chickens can get sick then so be on the look out after a big rain. The symptoms are in the previous post.

Coccidiosis the Silent Killer.

It took me a few years to work out if a chicken has coccidiosis. Now I can do it very fast because I know my chickens. I will give you a few tips and I hope this helps.

A telltale sign is the chicken standing by itself with hunched shoulders ruffled feathers and its head tucked right down in between the shoulders with its head pointing down resting on its chest.

When you go to pick the bird up it often feels weightless and combs and wattles look pale. Unwillingness to eat, and watery or bloody diarrhea or stools the colour of green leaves. You will know it when you see it it. Green leaf stools are not common.

All chickens are at risk, but growing chickens and young adults ages 3 to 8 weeks old seem most susceptible and also when they first get put in the yard from an indoor coop or enclosure.

We recommend having a coccidiostat to hand when purchasing new pullets. It is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. It can cost you the life of your chicken.

Coccidiosis is naturally present in the soil environment and is typically the number one killer of free range poultry. Young pullets are most at risk when mixed in with existing poultry. You think your existing chickens are well and they are; but they have developed immunity to the parasite in your yard. If you add new pullets they may get sick and die as they have no immunity and may you feel you want to blame the person you bought the chickens from thinking they sold you sick chickens. This is not the case.

Coccidiosis is caused by protozoan parasites of the Eimeria genus which are always present in the shed and farm environment. Their reproductive form – the oocysts – are present in the birds' droppings and from here they can be ingested by other animals. In the city wild birds fly the parasite into your yard by special delivery so try not to leave food in places where it is easily attracts and is accessible to the wild birds.
