The Blackbutt mantle piece I recently made has finally been installed in its newly renovated house in Victoria. The warm timber complements the cool grey tones.

Haven’t posted anything in a while and now I’m bombarding…sorry 😬 but it will probably end up being another couple of months before I post again so this will make up for it 🤣 This is sexy Rexy staffy. Don’t be fooled by that butter wouldn’t melt look he’s giving, he’s a cheeky so-and-so. But super cuddly.

A repeat customer asked if I could build her a mantle piece from blackbutt timber. She wanted the look of a solid piece but without the weight of it so I beveled every joining edge at 45 degrees, and used one piece to wrap around the front and sides so it flowed aesthetically. The back was left open so it could be slotted onto a bracket somewhat like a floating shelf system. The piece weighed 17kgs in total instead of 57! I also got to use my newest tool, the Festool Domino which made the glue up soooo much easier 👏🏼 I 💚 it! Finished in Oil Plus 2C in Pure.

Bev…
My sister recently painted this beautiful tribute to an elderly lady who was a patient in the care facility she used to work at. She was brave enough to enter it into the Archibald Prize and she asked me to frame it for her with a floating oak frame stained in Black Japan. The family of Bev were delighted and overwhelmed with emotion when they saw the painting. Well done you need to set up an art account to show your other pieces.

My neighbour had an antique two man logging saw that his ancestors had used for logging in Tasmania many years ago. He wanted to restore it and hang it in his workshop for sentimental value. I used the original plywood handle to create a template from mdf. Then using the template along with my router and the 3001 pattern bit from I created a new handle in beautiful Queensland Maple. It’s finished in Evolution in Classic.

Some occasions call for a bow tie…

This was a beautiful piece of American Oak except for the split in the end. Rather than waste half the board I chiselled out a recess and glued in a bow tie to stop it from separating any further. Then a little black epoxy to fill the gap. It provides an eye catching contrast, a uniqueness to the piece and utilises timber that some may have thought only good enough for kindling. It sits on the underside of the bath tray.

Flashback to the desk I built from reclaimed Tallowwood.

Customer review
“Hartley & Hound took on the task of creating a custom measured and built gaming console to suit a small cavity in our sons room. The desk has been a much anticipated arrival in our home.. and upon delivery has been put immediately to work! Our son loves it! It is beyond perfect. A desk built for modern purposes but crafted using traditional woodworking techniques. We 100% recommend H&H for any custom build!”
