One Centre Square - Officer

The composition centres around two female figures shown in calm,
intimate gestures. Rather than depicting clinical or literal references
to health, the figures express wellbeing through body language: one
appears relaxed and self-embracing, while the other smiles with
her eyes gently covered. These gestures suggest trust, comfort and
emotional ease, reinforcing the idea that wellbeing is both physical
and mental.
Surrounding the figures, soft abstract elements and organic forms
flow across the wall. These shapes act as visual metaphors for
breath, movement and inner balance, creating a sense of rhythm and
continuity throughout the space. The subtle botanical motif introduces
a natural presence, referencing growth, healing and renewal, while
also connecting the mural to its broader environment.
The use of colour plays an important role in the work. Cool tones
establish a calming atmosphere, while warmer accents introduce
energy and warmth, reflecting the balance between care and vitality
found in spaces dedicated to health and wellness. The layered
composition and graphic framing elements help guide the viewer’s eye

The interior mural continues the visual language established in the
exterior work, maintaining the same contemporary aesthetic while
shifting the focus toward themes of wellbeing, health and everyday
balance.

//ARTWORK DESCRIPTION.
The exterior mural presents a visual narrative that connects Officer’s historical origins with its present-day identity as a growing community space. The composition unfolds as a continuous sequence, where different elements interact to tell a shared story.
The main wall features the figure of a timber worker, directly referencing Officer’s origins as a timber yard. This image represents labour, collective effort and
the foundations of the area, shaped by both natural resources and the people who worked with them.
The scene then transitions to a more intimate and human moment, showing hands holding freshly cut timber. This gesture acts as a bridge between past and present, symbolising the outcome of work and the passing on of values such as care, collaboration and continuity across generations.
The final section of the mural reinterprets the historic Officer railway station, a key element in the suburb’s development as a railway siding. The station becomes a symbol of connection, movement and growth, reflecting how transport and shared spaces helped shape the local community.
Visually, the mural combines figurative imagery with contemporary graphic elements and colour blocks, allowing historical references to sit within a modern visual language. The work aims to honour the memory of the place while reimagining it through a contemporary lens, creating an accessible, family-friendly piece that feels rooted in local identity.

How much do you know about Officer's History?

Originally known as "Gin Gin Bin" and later "Officer's Wood Siding" (est. 1881) for the railway, the area was named after early settler Robert Officer. The railway station was originally known as Officer’s Wood Siding, named after the pastoralist Robert Officer. Vast amounts of timber were cleared from his land for firewood.
