Pit Firing

Pit firing is humanity’s oldest method of baking ceramics, where unglazed, burnished bisque ware is nestled directly into an earth trench layered with combustibles like sawdust, seaweed, wood shavings, and mineral salts. Once ignited, the fire builds erratic, unmeasured heat—typically peaking between 600°C and 900°C—before the pit is smothered with soil or metal sheeting to starve the flames of oxygen. This heavy reduction traps dense smoke and vaporizing minerals against the porous clay, permanently painting the surface with dramatic carbon black. Because the ware does not fully vitrify at these temperatures, the finished pieces remain porous and decorative, serving as a raw, tangible canvas of the fire's unpredictable path.
