After the former Coalition Government put an unfair wages cap on nurses, the Minns Labor Government is delivering the largest pay increase in over two decades.

This is part of our plan to rebuild our frontline workforce including:

● Scrapping the unfair wages cap
● Rolling out safe staffing meaning more nurses to treat you in hospital
● Saving the 1,112 nurses the opposition planned to sack
● Giving almost 8000 healthcare students subsidies to help them complete their course
● Recruiting over 5,000 more nurses

This morning I had the opportunity to see the latest stage of work to upgrade the sport and recreation facilities in Andromeda Drive Reserve, with Senator Tony Sheldon, Mayor Clr Todd Carney and Councillor Hollie McLean.

Additional storage space in the amenities building and drainage improvements on the eastern field were undertaken, as part of an upgrade funded by the NSW Government through the Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program ($1.7 million) and the Australian Government's Investing in Our Communities Program ($450,000), in partnership with Penrith City Council.

Transurban is running a special round of Community Grants to support the communities where we operate. This is in addition to our annual Community Grants Program that will run later in 2026.

Transurban is conscious of the pressures being felt by our customers and communities. To help meet the increased demand for essentials, this additional round will offer grants to community organisations providing emergency relief such as access to food, housing, and transport.

These grants will be available to eligible organisations in Greater Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane.

Applications can be submitted for any amount up to $10,000 to support organisations of all sizes and at least one grant in each state will be dedicated to a First Nations organisation.

Like our annual Community Grants program, eligible organisations must hold DGR status or be an ACNC registered charity.

Applications will close Tuesday 5 May 2026.

The Minns Labor Government is rolling out a nation leading Number Screening Check for NSW public school students.

Every Year 1 students will be tested on their essential mathematics skills. This way their teacher can catch if they need a little extra help, early in their learning.

The early years of a child’s schooling are critical. That’s why these screening checks are being introduced, while students are still developing critical foundational learning skills.

This is all part of the Minns Labor Government's work to rebuild public education.

The Minns Labor Government has delivered free FluMIST to make the flu vaccine more accessible for parents with children aged 2-4.

This builds on our other initiatives to make healthcare more accessible across Penrith including:

- Allowing GPs to diagnose and prescribe for ADHD
- Allowing pharmacists to resupply the oral contraceptive pill and treat
- UTIs and minor skin conditions
- Slashing emergency department wait times for emergency patients

There’s more to do, and the Minns Labor Government will continue rebuilding the public healthcare system in Penrith.
