My Son Sleeps Near My Heart

I wrote this poem after watching the Steven Spielberg film A.I. from 2001. I wanted to see what people thought of AI in the early 200's and contrast it to our understanding today. What I didn't expect from the film was a futuristic Pinocchio story that was deeply meaningful.

I drew on elements from the A.I. film and the Pinocchio story to weave together a poem that hopefully gets to the heart of a boy becoming a real boy. The heart of the story to me isn't how a puppet or a boy becomes a real boy. It is the story of how a boy becomes a man.

Pinocchio experienced the folly of his youth. He is deceived and succumbs to the pull of Pleasure Island. He transforms into something entirely different again and brays like the ass. He then has his redemption moment recovering his father from the belly of the whale.

I was inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's poem called "I sit beside the fire and Think" and wanted to do a version of my own. As I sat beside my own fire thoughts and reflections turned to family, faith, time, and more. Please enjoy and best wishes.
