With a slew of awards between them (not to mention a backlist that could fill your bookshelves on their own) Kate and Juliet join us to discuss the long history of fairytales and fantasy, oral storytelling traditions, how they weave all this knowledge into their stories, as well as telling us a bit about their latest books and current projects.

More about Kate & Juliet
Kate Forsyth is an award-winning author, poet, and oral storyteller. Her novels include The Changeling, set during Scotland’s first witch-hunt; Psykhe, a reimagining of the ancient Greek myth from a feminist perspective; The Crimson Thread, a retelling of the minotaur myth set in Crete during World War II which The Washington Review called ‘a riveting tale of courage, love, and betrayal’; and Bitter Greens, a reimagining of ‘Rapunzel’ which won the American Library Award for Best Historical Fiction.

Juliet Marillier has been a full-time writer for over twenty years. She was born and educated in Aotearoa New Zealand but now lives in Western Australia. Juliet’s novels combine historical fiction, folkloric fantasy, romance and family drama. Juliet has won many awards for her writing, including five Aurealis Awards and four Sir Julius Vogel Awards; the American Library Association’s Alex Award; the Prix Imaginales and the 2019 Sara Douglass Book Series Award for the Blackthorn & Grim series. In 2025, Juliet was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the World Fantasy convention in the UK.

Last week we had the absolute pleaseure of hearing award-winning historian Vannessa Hearman discuss her insightful and dramatic book The Good Sea: The Journey of the Tasi Diak and the Politics of Refugee Protection in Australia.

Vannessa was in conversation with Professor Farida Fozdar and together they unravelled the journey and impacts of the Tasi Diak, the only refugee boat to reach Australia throughout the 24-year Indonesian occupation of East Timor. The crowd were quietly rapt, listening to these two powerhouse women, and we learned so much from them!

We had a fabulous time on Thursday night for the launch of Alex Dook's latest book, Nothing Personal.
Alex took to the stage with non other than local crime legend David Whish-Wilson to discuss the ins and outs of this suburban thriller. There was wine, there was crime, there was a packed house of avid readers hanging off these two authors every word!

In 1975, a 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain (Dominic Sessa, The Holdovers) travels to Provincetown, Cape Cod and stumbles into the chaotic world of a restaurant kitchen, setting off a summer that will shape the course of his life. The film also stars Antonio Banderas, Emilia Jones, and Leo Woodall (Tuner).
