Worth knowing before the World Cup gets into full swing.

SBS and SBS Viceland are broadcasting every single match free to air, with SBS On Demand covering live streaming for anyone watching on a device. No subscription required for any of it.

The catch is that free-to-air quality depends entirely on your antenna setup.

Wind, rain and ageing connections all chip away at signal strength over time, often without being obvious until a big broadcast exposes it.

A quick test now is the easiest way to avoid finding out mid-match.

If you are renovating right now this is the conversation worth having with your builder or electrician before the walls get closed up.

Running antenna cabling and TV points through open walls is a fraction of the time and cost compared to doing it after plasterboard is up, set and painted. Chasing cables through finished walls means cutting, patching and repainting. In a room that has just been freshly painted that is nobody's preferred outcome.

The same applies to wall mount preparation. Getting the right backing board installed between studs during the build gives you a solid mounting surface at exactly the right height for the screen size and room layout you are planning. Doing it after the walls are closed means either working with whatever studs happen to be in the right place or adding backing through the finished wall surface.

TV point placement is worth thinking through room by room before the rough in stage. Where will furniture actually sit. Where will the TV be. Is there going to be a screen in the outdoor area. Does the bedroom need a point. Will the study need one. Getting all of this into the rough in scope while the walls are open costs very little and saves a significant amount of work later.

We work with homeowners and builders during the renovation stage to get antenna cabling, TV points and wall mount preparation done properly before it becomes difficult.

Three quick checks before calling a technician that solve the problem more often than you would expect.

Retune your channels. Broadcast frequencies change occasionally and a full retune from scratch rather than just adding channels often brings back ones that have disappeared. Check every coaxial connection at the back of the TV and at the wall plate and make sure they are all fully hand tightened. Loose connections cause more reception problems than most people realise. Check whether the issue is on all channels or only specific ones. Specific channels dropping out points to signal strength. All channels affected at once usually points to a physical connection or antenna issue.

Still not right after those three? Time to get a professional signal test done.

Outdoor TV installations are one of the fastest growing requests we handle and there is one mistake that comes up more than any other.

People buy a standard indoor TV, mount it under a covered patio and assume the overhead roof provides enough protection. For some locations it does. For most Australian conditions it does not.

Here is what actually damages a standard TV when it is installed outdoors. UV exposure from indirect sunlight degrades the screen surface and the casing over time even without direct sun hitting it. Humidity, particularly in coastal and subtropical areas, corrodes internal electronics through condensation that builds up inside the unit overnight and evaporates during the day. This cycle repeats every day and the cumulative effect shows up as corrosion on circuit boards and connections that the manufacturer's warranty specifically excludes as environmental damage. Temperature swings between a cold winter night and a warm afternoon put stress on components designed to operate within a narrower range than outdoor conditions provide.

A dedicated outdoor rated TV from manufacturers like Samsung, SunBrite or Hisense is built to IP55 weatherproofing standards or higher, has anti glare screens rated for outdoor brightness levels and carries UV resistant casings designed for years of outdoor use. The cost is higher than an equivalent indoor model but it is the correct solution for any installation that is not in a fully weatherproof enclosed space.

Getting the signal to the outdoor location also needs proper cabling through weatherproof conduit to an outdoor rated wall plate. Wireless options exist but introduce quality reduction and failure points not worth accepting for a permanent installation.

Antenna or streaming. Which one does your household actually rely on when it matters most?

Most people think they have fully moved to streaming until there is a live sport event, the internet goes down during something important or the broadcast delay on streaming ruins a moment that the whole street already knows about.

What does your current setup actually look like day to day?

Wall mounting a TV looks straightforward until you start and realise how many decisions actually matter.

Height is the most important one and the most commonly got wrong. The instinct is to mount the screen high on the wall where it is visible from everywhere in the room. The problem is that optimal viewing position for extended watching is with your eye line roughly level with the centre of the screen when seated. Mount it too high and you are looking up for the entire duration of whatever you are watching. Over a two hour movie or a full sporting event that becomes genuinely uncomfortable.

Stud placement is the next consideration. A TV mount needs to be fixed into wall studs or appropriate masonry anchors to safely support the weight and leverage of the screen. Plasterboard alone is not sufficient for anything larger than a very small screen. Finding studs, assessing the wall structure and selecting the right fixing method for the specific wall type is what separates a mount that holds safely for years from one that fails unexpectedly.

Cable management is the detail that separates a clean result from one that looks unfinished. Running cables through the wall cavity to a power point and antenna connection at screen height requires cutting, fishing cables and patching. Done properly it is invisible. Done as an afterthought it looks exactly like that.

Getting all three right the first time is significantly easier than correcting them afterwards when the holes are already in the wall.

The FIFA World Cup kicks off on SBS June 12.

104 matches live and free on free to air television. The Socceroos open against Turkey on June 14 at 2pm AEST.

If your reception has been unreliable lately now is the time to sort it. Watching a World Cup match through a pixelating screen is not an experience worth having.
