Animals of Antiquity. A collection of coins displaying just a few coins depicting animals on their reverse. Coinage was not only a means of economic transaction, but also a platform for cultural expression, propoganda and a means of spreading religious and idealogical beliefs.

Each coin here symbolises or celebrates something different. The elephant; portraying the power of Rome, famously used on Julius Caesar's coins. Or the owl, which affirmed the wisdom, vigilance and might of Athens.
One can learn so much about the cultural beliefs through the coins of thousands of years ago.

Trade and the economy of Ancient Rome. The coins we find today are a testament to the massive economy of Rome. Road networks and shipping routes allowed any sort of goods to be transported throughout the Empire, towards Rome and the Provincial Capitals.
A rich politician could use his millions of sestertius to furnish his Holiday home in Pompeii with rugs from Anatolia (Turkey), glassware from Alexandria (Egypt) and Marble tables from Greece. He and his family may wear gold jewellery from Iberia (Spain) and sleep on Egyptian linen bedsheets. He may have even gifted his wife a carved pendant with Amber sourced from Germania.

For a Roman, everything was at one's disposal, if you were lucky enough to have the money that is.
