A gorgeous Ohio Rockingham pitcher by Harker, Taylor & Co. Full bodied hound dog handle with raised relief hunting scenes covering the entire body. Raised mark on the base reading "HARKER TAYLOR CO. / EAST LIVERPOOL / OHIO." Absolutely an original, NOT a reproduction.

Harker Taylor & Company was formed in East Liverpool, Ohio, in 1846 by Benjamin Harker, his sons George and Benjamin, Jr. and James Taylor. The company was known for producing Rockingham and yellowware pottery, especially their distinctive hound-handled mugs, spittoons, and large water coolers. In 1931, the company relocated to Chester and Newell, West Virginia, and closed in 1972, after being sold to the Jeanette Glass Company of Pennsylvania. Antique Goosewing broadaxe hewing ax 18th century marked SV. Probable Pennsylvania origin. Cutting edge is properly beveled for hewing beams. Two imprints with initials "SV" between three imprinted logos in semi-circular garland form. Handle is very early, possibly the original, with a close-fitting eyelet wedged in place by a rosehead nail, and a clubbed end.

Wonderful hand blown American flip glass. Wheel-etched foliate and tendril border. Bubbles, swirls, and open pontil all plainly evident.

Flip was a drink usually made with beer, cider rum,or stale ale, sometimes sweetened with molasses or sugar. It was heated by plunging a red-hot iron called a flip dog or loggerhead, into the glass, causing the drink to hiss and foam. Particularly popular in New England.

Waldo Peirce (1884-1970) was a flamboyant and colorful Maine artist, known as much for his Bohemian lifestyle as for his expressive, naivist art. Edward Curtis is one of the best-known 19th and 20th century photographers of Native American culture.

Curtis spent more than 30 years on his collection The North American Indian, visiting over 80 tribes and taking over 40,000 photographs. He often traveled to remote areas under harsh conditions and went deep into debt. His marriage failed, and he eventually lost the rights to his own work, selling the plates and prints for almost nothing. Yet he remained committed to his project until the end.

EXTRAORDINARY PAINT DECORATED CORNER CUPBOARD

About 42 3/4" high x 27 3/4" x 15 1/2" overall.

DESCRIPTION

Wonderful five-sided corner cupboard. Probably Italian. Grain painted case. Paint decorated panels filled with hand painted floral displays. Dated "1789" on the door frame. Hand forged iron hinges and lock plate (non-functioning lock). Door easily lifts off hinge pins. Wide overhung cornice over half-column applied red and gold painted balusters. Cream colored interior paint. Painted drawer with the original carved and painted wooden pull. Hand planed rough backboards.

CONDITION

Overall excellent. Some surface wear and paint loss, particularly around the cornice, easily commensurate with age and use. Side section missing from one painted baluster (all visible in the images). A SPLENDID EIGHTEENTH CENTURY EUROPEAN CORNER CABINET.

MID TO LATE 19TH CENTURY

About 15 x 10 1/4" x 5 1/2" overall.

DESCRIPTION

Wonderful inlaid lap desk. Richly grained rosewood. Delicate diamond-shaped mother-of-pearl inlays around the top edges. Green felt interior surfaces. Interior wood appears to be spruce. Silver inlaid panel on the lid with a very faint monogram. Silver lock escutcheon (no key). Inside are compartments for ink bottles, pens, a hand made ruler and an old weaving shuttle.

CONDITION

Overall excellent. Two small interior partitions are loose. Negligible age checks on the lid. Minor surface roughage around the edges, well commensurate with age and use (all visible in the images). Rich, dark age patina. A WONDERFUL MARITIME RELIC FROM THE DAYS OF WOODEN SAILING SHIPS.
