♥️ MATILDA BOOKSHOP CHARITY DAY♥️

Tomorrow is our monthly charity day where 15% of the value of each book sold, either in the shop or via our website, is donated to an organisation we believe in.

Choosing to buy your books from us tomorrow means you'll be helping support Dementia Australia, who help families affected by the condition, as they provide expert guidance and compassionate support when families feel overwheled or unsure where to turn, and they direct dementia research into preventionand improved treatments, bringing hope to future generations.

All of us at Matilda Bookshop were very very sad when Kasey Chambers recently announced her departure. However we recognise that her professional opportunity as a full-time school librarian, which she came by thanks to her academic diligence and excellence, was too good to pass up.

We will miss many things about working with her, not least her avowed enthusiasm for childhood literacy and the efforts she made to support this during her six years with us. Between weekly story time, children’s book clubs and relentless championing of kids’ books Kasey left no stone unturned in promoting a love of reading to children of all ages.

To the list of things we will miss: her vast organisational skills and willingness to label EVERYTHING, unparalleled side-eye capacity in reels, her role as scrupulous moral compass and, most importantly, the calm and friendly nature that endeared her to everyone she worked with.

She will always be a firm friend of this bookshop and we wish her the very best for her adventures in the future ❤

On this episode of ‘Let’s Torture Heather for Content,’ we have made her rank her five-star reads; an impossible task for even the most decisive reader.

Suffice to say, all of these books are a hard-recommend from the queen of hot takes 👑❤️

In the words of Herman Melville, I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I’ll go to it with a massive TBR. Or something like that. Here are the books that have made it off our heaving TBR pile 📚❤

❤️📚 The Books We Loved Most in July📚❤️

In the depths of winter, our booksellers have been gravitating to punchy novellas about hell, libraries, trauma, and obsession, and emotionally-chewy novels about deceit, death, familial love, and the Siberian Tundra. Moody reads for a moody season ❄❤

MOLLY / EMILIE - White Moss by Anna Nerkagi
KASEY - Said the Dead by Doireann Ní Ghríofa
JO - Whistler by Ann Patchett
GAVIN - You Are the Führer's Unrequited Love by Jean-Noël Orengo
ROSE - A Short Stay in Hell by Steven L. Peck
HEATHER - My Death by Lisa Tuttle
NADIA - Repetition by Vigdis Hjorth

❤️ Our Booker Prize Longlist Predictions ❤️

Our version of the Olympics is almost here–it’s Booker Prize Season 🏅📚

We were so humbly delighted to have championed last year’s winner, Flesh, from the very beginning that we –of course– had to attempt to recreate that thrill this year. These are the stories that we have read and loved and feel are deserving of having a revered spot on the Booker Prize Longlist for 2026. The Longlist drops next week. We are throwing our hats in the ring, once more.

If we are completely wrong, this post never existed.

Here are our picks, in no particular order:

A Beast Slinks Towards Beijing by Alice Evelyn Yang
The Things We Never Say by Elizabeth Strout
Life of M by Rachel Cusk
Beginning Middle End by Valeria Luiselli
Transcription by Ben Lerner
The Dead Don’t Bleed by Neil Rollinson
The Shadow of the Object by Chloe Aridjis
Said the Dead by Doireann Ní Ghríofa
My Year in Paris with Getrude Stein by Deborah Levy
Paradiso 17 by Hannah Lillith Assadi
Departure(s) by Julian Barnes
The Ruiners by Ellena Savage
Whistler by Ann Patchett
Permanence by Sophie Mackintosh
Vigil by George Saunders

Who says crime is just for adult readers? 🤔🚨

Winter is the season for…COSY CRIME! 🔪🔥
…and also not so cosy! Heartstopping thrillers, twisty mysterious, curious capers, who-dunnit’s and ever-so-slightly-left-side-of-legal japes! We think the chill of Winter is the perfect time to spend an evening in with our preferred variety of literary malfeasance! What is yours?
