Some books just need to be read, and re-read, and read again and still you can’t do them justice.
Each books is unique, it shares a perspective, an opportunity for learning and change.

The Books…
The Hunger Games: Dystopian YA novel about survival, rebellion, and media control, following Katniss through a televised fight to the death in a deeply unequal society.

Yellowface: Contemporary satire about plagiarism, racism, ambition, and publishing culture, told through an unreliable narrator whose bad decisions become increasingly difficult to ignore.

Wifedom: Feminist biography exploring the overlooked life of George Orwell’s wife, examining marriage, unpaid labour, authorship, and the women often erased from history.

She I Dare Not Name: Feminist memoir reflecting on sexuality, identity, silence, and self-acceptance within conservative Australia, blending personal experience with broader q***r and feminist history.

The Dictionary of Lost Words: Historical fiction novel about language, class, and feminism, following a girl collecting overlooked words during the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary.

The Boy in the Dress: Children’s novel about identity and acceptance, following a boy discovering confidence through fashion while challenging expectations around masculinity and self-expression.

City of Bones: YA fantasy following Clary Fray into a hidden world of Shadowhunters, demons, magic, and supernatural conflict beneath modern-day New York City.

Scarpetta: Forensic crime thriller centred on medical examiner Kay Scarpetta, combining murder investigations, psychology, and forensic science with strong procedural detail and tension.

We’ve all been told not to judge a book by its cover, but how can you not when it’s so eye catching?
Maybe it’s the lettering is gilt in gold, maybe it’s so simple you see calm in chaos, perhaps the colouring is out of place, or it looks like it contains secrets.
Here are a few books I personally have yet to read, but my I couldn’t stop my gaze from catching on them.

Have you ever come across a book you just couldn’t skip over?

What?! It was published in 2006, it IS older than me 🙄😂

My poor manager, I am prone to dry humour and sarcasm 😅
However! Working some of the books are older than me! That’s why they’re called classics, silly.
Our special editions also have a couple years on me, but all our books are in good nick and in need of re-homing. Think of them like a puppy making googly eyes at you… so cute, and in need of a forever home 💕😉

The Widow by Fiona Barton: a highly readable, entry level crime. For those interested in psychological suspense rather than hard-boiled police procedurals. It is often compared to popular, accessible thrillers like Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train.

Déjà Dead by Kathy Reichs: A good, though intense, starting point for readers interested in forensic-focused crime fiction. Excellent, entry-level science in this one!

NYPD Red by James Patterson: Perfect for readers looking for fast-paced action without intense, slow-burn technical details. It features short chapters and a “page-turner” style common in Patterson’s books. Follows a special unit NYPD team, in all the glitz and glamour of New York.

Post Mortem by Patricia Cornwell: An excellent foundational choice for beginner crime fiction readers, particularly those interested in forensics, as it launched the modern forensic thriller genre. It is the first book in the Dr. Kay Scarpetta series. The research into detailed autopsy scenes, police procedure, and suspense have set the standard for later shows like CSI.

The Thursday Murder Club: (possibly my favourite on this list!) Offers a lighthearted, humorous, and character-driven “cosy mystery” rather than a dark, violent thriller. It is highly accessible for those new to the genre, focusing on witty dialogue, endearing characters, and charming British humor.

Devil’s Kitchen by Candice Fox: It is a “gritty, dark, and dangerous” story with intense scenes of fire fighting and crime. A good choice for readers who enjoy fast-paced and action filled novels.
