Before the most recent 2024 US Election. Australia has enjoyed significant and beneficial trade and defence relationships with the US.

Whether President Trump will maintain such relationships will depend on his vision of how the US stands in the global context, and that by no means guarantees continuation of deals like AUKUS which otherwise would be critical to the security of
Australia.

A sentimental journey with an unexpected outcome

With the help of friends Liz and I were taken to a site I have not been back to since age 8! But I clearly remembered it as a playground next to Roman ruins which my parents took me to several times. I had also remembered it butted onto a golf course and watched two Japaneses golfers playing in the fashionable plus-fours of the time. All this was in a place called Virginia Waters in Berkshire.
As I grew up and learnt more about art history I assumed that the ruins must have been created as part of one of the romantic garden landscape so popular in the 17th Century.
It turned out that memory I had retained so long proved accurate. There have been many changes to the surrounding roads and developments along it although the ruins are there much as i remembered them.
But to my dismay this memory is bitter sweet because I have now discovered that the ruins were stolen from Leptis Magna a historic Roman City site on the north coast of Africa. Another case of a wealthy British aristocrat acquiring ancient works of art on their travels. The Elgin Marbles writ large!
