Why do stretch marks start purple… then fade?

When stretch marks first form, the skin has stretched rapidly and the dermis (your collagen layer) has torn slightly. At this early stage — called striae rubra — the marks look red, pink or purple because:

• Blood vessels are more visible
• There’s active inflammation
• The skin is thinner in that area

Over time, inflammation settles, blood supply reduces, and the skin remodels. Collagen reorganises — but it doesn’t return to its original structure.

That’s when stretch marks fade to white or silvery (striae alba).

They don’t “disappear” — they mature.

The purple stage is when treatments tend to work best because the tissue is still active and vascular.
