Hanua Vanua

Hanua Vanua Noa'ia e mauri and Ni sa Bula Vinaka! We are here to learn and share the Rotuman + Fijian language and culture from the perspective of being raised overseas.

We are not linguistic or cultural experts and try to seek the knowledge from those who are. Hanua Vanua was born from a deep appreciation for our combined Fijian, Rotuman, and Tuvaluan heritage. We felt a strong calling to reconnect with our roots, leading us to create pieces that blend tradition and culture with modern practicality. We are a husband and wife duo and look forward to delivering tho

ughtful and practical pieces that encourage language and cultural learning. Production is outsourced and all pieces are designed in-house based in Sydney, Australia. This brand is for everyone—whether you're Fijian, Rotuman, mixed, or simply drawn to island culture. Our hope is to inspire others to embrace their heritage and keep it alive for generations to come. We invite you to follow along with us on this wonderful journey.

If someone were to ask you why do you celebrate Fiji Day? In short, below is why ⬇️. October 10 1970 marked the end of British colonial rule and the birth of a self governing nation. How amazing it would've been to witness this occasion at the time. Happy Fiji Day 🇫🇯😎

Na noqu vosa: me na tekivu mai vale” My language starts at home.
And apparently… so do all my arguments. 😂

“Kauta mai na isele!” (Bring the knife!)
“Sa katakata tu na wai!” (The water’s hot!)
“Kauta tani na isulu qo!” (Move these clothes!)

Whether you’re in the rumu ni moce (bedroom), vale ni sili (bathroom), or vale ni kuro (kitchen), there’s a Fijian word waiting to be learned (or shouted by mum).

Let’s bring Fijian back home — one funny household word at a time.

🇫🇯 ✨ Fijian Language Week begins! 🇫🇯

Tonight, we’re ending our Sunday the island way with a short prayer, a simple hymn, and a few Vosa VakaViti (Fijian words) to fill our hearts and homes. 💛

Whether you speak fluently or you’re just starting your journey — remember, every word is a seed of identity. 🌱
Speak it. Sing it. Pray it.
Because the Fijian language isn’t just learned, it’s lived. 🕊️

Congratulations Rhyelle Aisea🌺. Interesting fact: Fiji's First Miss Hibiscus was Liebling Marlow (née Hoeflich) whose mother was from Rotuma also. Amazing!

Miss Hibiscus 2025 is Miss National Fire Authority - Rhyelle Aisea 🌺

🎶 Back again with Part 2 of the Rotuman Alphabet — but this time, it’s a SONG.
If you can remember TikTok jingles you didn’t even ask for, you can remember your culture’s alphabet.
No excuses. Press play, sing along, and lock it in 😁 🔑✨

💡 Tip: Sing along twice, then try without looking at the screen to test your recall.
Let us know in the comments how you went or what you would like to see more of, we're all ears and coconuts too.

Unwind by learning the Rotuman alphabet 🌺📝 A simple, fun way to end your day with culture and connection. (And yes, sorry for the little pause — I’ve been working on some things behind the scenes 👀 but we're backkk!😄 ). Massive thank you to Pastor Mario Rigamoto of El-Peteli Nadi for taking time out to help us out with the basics. Pt 2 coming soon...

🌦️ Cold Thursday here in Sydney 🇦🇺.. but our greetings are always warm! ❄️💬
No matter the weather, a simple hello can lift the mood, island style! 🌴
Here are some everyday greetings to sprinkle into your convos today:
📍 Rotuman: Noa‘ia — Hello
📍 Fijian (Ni sa bula — Hello / Hi)
Use it with your friends, your family, or even your neighbour’s dog. Bonus points if you say it with a smile 😄🐶

🗓️ Word of the day: 😅
We’ve all been there — late to work, stepped on someone’s toes (literally), or finished the last piece of pie without asking. 🙈
💬 "Sorry"
📍 Rotuman: Hanis ma röt‘ȧk
📍 Fijian: Vosoti au
Whether you're in Suva, Sydney or Sacramento, this is your go-to word for smoothing things over island-style. 🫶
Use it, mean it... and maybe bring food as backup. 🍰😉
