Mission Beach was definitely one of my favourite places on my trip. Even though I didn't see any cassowaries in the 3 days I was there, I still saw some wildlife and got some beach shots 🏖

I’d looked up TYTO Wetlands before my trip and had read reports of it rivaling Kakadu for birdlife, so I was hoping to see a wide variety of species that we don’t get to see as often in Victoria.

I stayed in a questionable hotel in Ingham purely for these wetlands and I only saw an egret and these funny little Comb-crested Jacanas, affectionately known as lotusbirds or lilytrotters.

To be fair, these little guys were pretty cute - but still… where were all the birds?!

Story time 🦋🕷️

I had planned to take a stroll through the Butterfly Forest on Magnetic Island to see the Blue Tiger butterflies. I wandered into a small clearing and managed to capture a few photos… but then I looked up and saw a huge Golden Orb spider practically right above me.

Now, living in Melbourne, I don’t actually see many big spiders. In fact, the only huge spiders I’ve encountered have been when I’ve left Victoria, so I’m definitely not used to casually spotting them around me!

Being terrified of spiders, I completely froze while I decided whether I was brave enough to continue the walk or whether it was time to turn around. Then I noticed another one above me to the right of the first… and as I carefully backed away, I turned around and saw this enormous one much closer to the forest floor — aka much closer to me. 😳

I somehow managed to be brave enough to take a few photos before making a very quick exit, hoping that at least I’d captured some decent butterfly shots!

The photos really don’t show how big it actually was - it was at least the size of my hand, maybe even slightly longer. Definitely one of the biggest spiders I’ve ever seen! 🕷️

I had a perfect weekend on Magnetic Island, spotting koalas, rock wallabies, and so many different shades of blue - one of my favourite colours 💙

Highly recommend a visit there!

I only saw a few at Geoffrey Bay the evening I went, far too many humans and not enough animals for my liking! If I were to go back, is there another spot I could see them with sightly fewer people?

Back to the start of my trip - Magnetic Island.

I loved my time on this island and stayed in the most beautiful hostel (private room, I need my space 😅), chosen specifically for it's close location to these adorable rock wallabies 🦘
