A heartfelt thank you to Rutherglen High School for welcoming my family and I to be part of Tuesday’s NAIDOC celebration, hosted by the wonderful Year 9 Future Makers.
Days like these are so important. They bring our community together, create opportunities to learn from one another, and help ensure that our culture, stories, and traditions continue to be shared with future generations.
It was an honour to teach the students about traditional dance and boomerang throwing, and it was truly inspiring to see everyone embrace the experience. From rock painting and making Johnny cakes to dancing and learning to throw a boomerang, every activity reflected the spirit of NAIDOC Week—celebrating culture, connection, and respect.
A very special thank you goes to my daughter, Ellie, who made it possible for us to be involved. Standing beside her as she proudly shared our culture and knowledge with the next generation was a moment that filled me with pride. Watching young people take such an active role in preserving and celebrating our traditions gives me great hope for the future.
It was also fantastic to see so many teachers getting involved, having a laugh, and giving boomerang throwing a go. Seeing everyone participate with such enthusiasm made the day even more special.
Thank you to everyone at Rutherglen High School for your warm welcome, your respect for our culture, and your commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences for your students. We feel privileged to have been part of such a special day and would be honoured to return next year or support any future cultural events within the school and wider community.
