Long ago, in the heart of riverine Bengal, a story of wonder was born—the story of muslin.
In the misty mornings of Dhaka, by the gentle riversides and in the quiet village courtyards, skilled artisans would craft a fabric so delicate it was called “as light as air.” This fabric was muslin—once admired and desired all over the world.
It is said that muslin was so fine that an entire saree could pass through a ring. Some called it “Abrawan,” meaning flowing water, while others named it “Shabnam,” like the softness of morning dew.
This craft reached its peak during the Mughal Empire. In royal courts, in the attire of queens, muslin became a symbol of elegance and luxury. Merchants traveled from distant lands, drawn solely by the allure of this extraordinary fabric.
But time changes everything…
When the British East India Company arrived in Bengal, a new chapter began. With the rise of machine-made fabrics and the burden of heavy taxes and exploitation, those golden days slowly faded away. The artisans’ hands fell still, and with them, generations of unmatched skill began to disappear.
At one point, muslin seemed to exist only in stories…
Yet, the story doesn’t end there.
Today, efforts are being made to revive this lost heritage—through Jamdani weaving, research, and the tireless dedication of artisans. Slowly, the lost glory of muslin is finding its way back.
Muslin is not just a fabric—it is our history, our pride, a priceless part of our cultural identity.
Perhaps what we wear today is not that ancient muslin—but its story still lives on, quietly, within our hearts. 💛
