The ingredient 𝑩𝑬𝑵𝒁𝑶𝒀𝑳 𝑷𝑬𝑹𝑶𝑿𝑰𝑫𝑬, which fights pimples, breaks down into 𝒃𝒆𝒏𝒛𝒆𝒏𝒆, a chemical known to cause cancer, especially 𝒍𝒆𝒖𝒌𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒂. Leukemia is a cancer of the blood that can make you very sick, require years of treatment, and in serious cases, can be fatal. This happens just from normal heat, like a warm bathroom or a car on a sunny day. Did you know L'Oreal owns the brand CeraVe? That means one of the biggest beauty companies in the world is at the center of this controversy.
Benzene can impact the central nervous system and may affect reproductive organs, according to the CDC, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers benzene to be a genotoxic carcinogen.
The scary part? The products are still being sold. No warning label. No recall. And scientists say there is no truly safe amount of benzene to be exposed to.
𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘀𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘄𝘀𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘀:
1️⃣ 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗩𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿-𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹. L'Oreal faces a class action lawsuit claiming its CeraVe benzoyl peroxide cleanser contains dangerous levels of the carcinogenic chemical benzene.
2️⃣ 𝗦𝗶𝘅 “𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻” 𝗹𝗮𝘄𝘀𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘀. meaning cases where a large group of people sue a company together, have been filed in United States federal courts over CeraVe and other acne products, claiming these treatments contain dangerously high levels of benzene, a chemical that causes cancer.
3️⃣ The products at the centre of the lawsuits are the CeraVe Acne Foam Cream Cleanser 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗩𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗻𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿 (4% BPO) and the 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗩𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗻𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝗵 (10% BPO).
4️⃣ 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗩𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝟱–𝟭𝟮 𝗽𝗽𝗺. Tests found that CeraVe cleansers contained benzene levels between 5 and 12 ppm. “ppm” means “parts per million,” which is how scientists measure tiny amounts of harmful chemicals in a product. To put it simply, even a small number like 5 ppm is already more than twice the maximum limit the US government considers conditionally acceptable, which is 2 ppm. At 12 ppm, that is six times over the limit.
6️⃣ ⚠️ 𝗡𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹; 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀. Valisure, the independent laboratory that discovered the problem, formally asked the FDA (the United States government agency responsible for making sure food and medicines are safe) to issue a recall, meaning to order the products to be pulled off store shelves and stopped from being sold. They also asked the FDA to update its safety rules for the industry. However, the FDA has not yet taken action, and these products are still sitting on store shelves, available for anyone to buy.
