Now at Tique: Trauma and Affect. (Mis)Understanding Pain in Art and Culture

Trauma and Affect: both concepts have become increasingly important in the critique of art, literature, and of culture in general, since the 1990s. In those years, a turn to trauma and a bit later also to affect took place. The concepts were being used in a great variety of ways, and in many disciplines and domains, such as q***r studies, feminism, cultural analysis, art critique, literary studies and postcolonial studies, as well as in disciplines such as sociology, and even in economics. Although the gain of this turn to affect and trauma is interesting, it has also resulted in major confusion; the terms have been overused and exhausted, and thus lost their power.

Ernst van Alphen looks at both trauma and affect through the lens of visual artworks and literature, drawing from many sources and disciplines. In the first part of this book, devoted to trauma, he explains how trauma originates in the past and what explains its re-enactment in the present. This assessment of trauma, of how it originates and manifests itself, is necessary in order to restore its critical power as a concept. The second part is devoted to the transmission of affect. In order to prompt reflection beyond affective responses that result in immediate strong emotions, he discusses artists who develop strategies that process affect into critical making and thinking.

The research shows which discourses of the first generation of female designers continue to shape the discipline today. ‘UN/SEEN’ questions traditional narratives and contributes to the discussion about design and gender.

A retrospective of the work of American artist Kiki Smith, who, through an extremely diverse range of media and techniques, focuses on the multiple forms that connect living beings to their environment.

The body, and particularly the female body, is the starting point for this relationship with the world. A social figure, it is also, quite simply, filled with fluids, organs, and viscera. It is also the means of communicating with our surroundings, through various senses that create a connection with nature, animals, plants, and minerals, with the air and the ocean. Finally, it encompasses a cosmic dimension, as it contains stardust, and urges us to transcend the limits of the known.

The catalog accompanying the provocative performance installation by Austrian artist and choreographer Florentina Holzinger, presented at the 61st Venice Biennale.

The artist Florentina Holzinger is one of the most important voices in contemporary art. On the occasion of her project SEAWORLD VENICE at the Austrian Pavilion at the 61st Intern. Art Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia, this publication brings together various perspectives on Holzinger’s artistic practice, her visual and choreographic vocabulary, and her themes. It includes texts by Claire Bishop, Caroline Lillian Schopp, Mire Lee, Anna Leon and Nora-Swantje Almes, contributions by Beatrice Cordua, Bettina Kogler, Georg Döcker, Matthias Lilienthal, Sara Ostertag and Felix Ritter, as well as an interview with Florentina Holzinger.

Florentina Holzinger (born 1986 in Vienna) is an Austrian performance artist and choreographer whose practice combines extreme physicality with theatrical precision to probe the limits of corporeal agency. Working across dance, performance, opera and theatre while critically engaging with their histories, Holzinger blends legitimised “high” culture with pop and countercultural currents to unsettle the lines between spectacle and subversion. In collaboration with a team and cast that bring expertise in a broad range of body-based practices and performance genres, her works experiment with body modification—in all its possible forms—as an interplay of transformation and illusion.

‘Rewriting the World’ documents the first major exhibition in the United States devoted to the Lettrist book, positioning Isidore Isou (1925–2007) and Lettrism as foundational to the history of artists’ books. Lettrism transformed literature and art by shifting meaning from words to letters and signs, anticipating the later Fluxus, conceptual art, experimental cinema, concrete poetry, comics, and more. Through essays, archival documents, and numerous illustrations, the publication foregrounds the Lettrist book as a site of formal, material, and conceptual experimentation, reframing Isou’s hyper-graphic novels and book objects as essential precedents for post-war and contemporary practices.

Now at Tique: Intelligent Life by Maryanne Amacher

Comprehensive and previously unpublished documentation on the American composer’s unproduced magnum opus.

Had it been produced, Maryanne Amacher’s media opera Intelligent Life would have represented the summation of the composer’s concept to date. As she wrote to John Cage in the autumn of 1983, following the untimely deaths of the opera’s patrons—Wies Smals, founder of De Appel, and curator Josine van Droffelaar, in a plane crash in the Swiss Alps—she would have at last had the support to “communicate the finest of my thought to others.” Amacher’s serial, intended for broadcast, sought to transmit her evolving ideas about perception, listening, and composition to a broader public—shifting music away from “nod and tap recognition” toward a transformative practice that could awaken intelligence to “unrecognized and new perceptual modes.”

Set in the year 2021, Intelligent Life follows the employees of Supreme Connections LLC, a music entertainment corporation navigating a future in which artificial intelligence generates music faster than composers can. Anticipating an industry-wide downturn, Supreme Connections president Aplisa Kandel seeks advanced technologies that will revolutionize the act of listening and the future of music, including a bio-music script that lets the user hear Bach from the aural perspective of a reindeer and a wearable device that goes beyond replicating the mechanical tympanic resonances of the listening subject to produce the “listening mind” or the “sophisticated perceiver”—capturing and reproducing all the emotional and psychological associations unique to each individual.

Maryanne Amacher (1938-2009) was a composer of large-scale fixed-duration sound installations and a highly original thinker in the areas of perception, sound spatialization, creative intelligence, and aural architecture. She is frequently cited as a pioneer of what has come to be called “sound art,” although her thought and creative practice consistently challenges key assumptions about the capacities and limitations of that genre. Often considered to be a part of a post-Cagean lineage, her work anticipates some of the most important developments in network culture, media arts, acoustic ecology, and sound studies.

Now at Tique: At the tip of the hand by Sungyoon Ahn

“At the tip of the hand” explores the nail salon as a space of labour and social exchange. The act of two women holding hands, applying polish, and waiting for it to dry is more than a beauty ritual. It is a moment of care, but also a reflection of the social expectations placed upon ‘cultivated’ bodies and the invisible work behind them. Beneath a flawlessly coated nail, unseen bodies persist—serving, tending, remaining out of sight. For this research, I gathered fragments—internet memes, news articles, literary excerpts, historical paintings—piecing them together into a small collage. Through these disparate elements, I sought to trace the tensions and sensations embedded in everyday gestures.
