USE OF UREA TOP-DRESSING FERTILIZER FOR HIGH YIELDS

As most parts of Zimbabwe recently received incessant rains, Urea fertiliser presents a good option for effective top-dressing. This is due to the fact that the conventional nitrogen source Ammonium Nitrate generally leaches under incessant rainfall which is not the case with Urea. This article provides basic information concerning Urea and its characteristics. The objective is for farmers to fully appreciate the nature of Urea and its effects, and secondly, to assist farmers with the proper use and application of Urea in Maize specifically.

Basic Description of Urea Fertilizer

Urea is a white crystalline solid fertilizer containing 46% nitrogen. It is widely used in the agricultural industry as a fertilizer or an animal feed additive. Here, we only discuss its use as a nitrogen top dressing fertilizer. Commercially, Urea fertilizer can be purchased as prills or as a granulated material. In the past, it was usually produced by dropping liquid Urea from a "prilling tower" while drying the product. The prills formed a smaller and softer substance than other materials commonly used in fertilizer blends. Today, Urea is largely manufactured as granules. Granules are larger, harder, and more resistant to moisture. As a result, granulated Urea has become a more suitable material for fertilizer blends.

Advantages of Urea Fertilizer

1. Urea can be applied to soil as a solid, or solution, or to certain crops as a foliar spray.

2. Urea usage involves little or no fire or explosion hazard.

3. Urea's high nitrogen analysis,( 46% N) helps reduce handling, storage and transportation costs over other dry nitrogen forms.

4. Urea manufacture releases few pollutants to the environment.

5. Urea, when properly applied, results in crop yield increases equal to other forms of nitrogen.

Urea Application Method for Optimal Crop Response

Nitrogen from Urea can be lost to the atmosphere through volatilization (gaseous) if the fertilizer remains on the soil surface for extended periods of time in warm weather. The key to the most efficient use of Urea is to incorporate it into the soil during with a tillage operation. Urea must be covered by soil immediately unless there is sufficient moisture for it to immediately dissolve into the soil to avoid volatilization losses. It may also be blended into the soil with irrigation water. A rainfall of as little as 6inches/ 154 mm is sufficient to blend Urea into the soil to a depth at which ammonia losses will not occur.

Urea Losses to Air

Urea breakdown begins as soon as it is applied to the soil. If the soil is totally dry, no reaction happens. But with the enzyme Urease, plus any small amount of soil moisture, Urea normally hydrolyzes and converts to ammonia gas and carbon dioxide. This can occur in 2 to 4 days, and happens quickly on high pH soils. Unless it rains, Urea must be incorporated during this time to avoid ammonia loss. Losses might be quite low in the spring if the soil temperature is low. Urea must always be applied under moist soil conditions.

WHAT IS PEN FATTENING?
Pen fattening involves the feeding of finishing beef cattle with a protein balanced, high-energy diet for a period of 70 to 120 days under confinement to increase live weights and improve degree of finish. There are many reasons for pen fattening, which include

To add extra weight to stock at a younger age and thus increase turnover and maximize output from the beef enterprise
To improve the degree of fatness and fleshiness (finish) of the carcass in order to achieve higher grades and better prices
To take advantage of seasonal beef price fluctuations at the abattoirs. Prices are generally favourable from October to February. The feedlot manager is usually a speculator.

Important Points About Broiler Feeds & Feeding

(Shared from Agribusiness Talk)

• It is very important to ensure the birds are actually EATING the feed! The poultry feeding game is all about ensur- ing that the birds are eating the feed!

• The next thing is to quantify the feed that is being consumed by the birds. The birds are meant to eat a certain amount of feed of a given quality over a given time period therefore make sure that is happening! If one is feeding a poor quality feed, the birds could be eating too much without the return in weight gain at the expense of the farmer’s pocket!

• Feed must be available at all times – the birds must not go without feed for any period of time except in the case of a managed darkness period.

• The feed must be the same – there must not be a chopping and changing of the feed! The feed must come from one source and produced using the same range of raw materials and produced in the same form. Should there be an unavoidable change, then the two differ ent feeds must be fed mixed for a period to allow a smooth breaking in from the old feed to the new feed.

• If one is to use concentrates mixed with maize, then the ratios must be based on weights, not on volume. The concen- trate and maize must be mixed thoroughly because the uniformity of the mix will determine the quality of the mix.

• The birds must not be fed any rotten or contaminated feed. If there is anything amiss about the feed, DO NOT feed it! The general rule is that if you cannot put that feed into your mouth for any visual or perceived reason, and then it is worse for the bird!

• Always check the expiry date of the feed from the bag label. Generally, poultry feeds can be kept for 6 months if under very good storage conditions. Any period over that, the quality of the feed needs verification by a competent person.

• Do not borrow feed from another poultry farmer. This is an easy way to spread infectious poultry diseases.

• Always make a distinction between cheap feed and cost-effective feed! Cheap feed is not necessarily cheap feed. Cheap feed is mostly expensive feed!

• Do your numbers all the time. Calculate your (feed) costs after every flock to see where your project is going!
