We’re pleased to share that MEC, another Canadian outdoor retailer, will now honour Breathe Outdoors gift cards at its Alberta store locations until December 31, 2025. We know that you’ll be in good hands—Breathe Outdoors and MEC have always shared the same mission, helping people get out on the trails by providing high quality outdoor gear.

By redeeming or transferring your Breathe Outdoors gift cards to MEC gift cards, you’ll have access to MEC’s wide assortment of top outdoor brands so you can gear up for the season ahead.

Bring your valid Breathe Outdoors gift card (with card number and PIN/Security Code) to one of MEC’s three Alberta locations: Calgary, Edmonton or Edmonton South.

Choose one of these options:
1️⃣ Redeem in-store: Use your card for a purchase. If you have a remaining balance, you’ll receive a new MEC gift card for that amount.

Yesterday marked the end of the trail for Breathe Outdoors, as our Calgary store officially closed its doors. After over 62 incredible years of serving Alberta’s outdoor community, including the earlier closure of our two Edmonton locations and online store, this chapter now comes to a close.

It’s a bittersweet moment. We’re filled with gratitude as we reflect on the journey—decades of outfitting adventurers, sharing trail stories, and being part of so many memorable outdoor experiences across this beautiful province.

To our loyal customers, dedicated team members, and community partners: thank you. Your support, passion, and spirit have meant the world to us. Though the stores may be closed, the memories—and the adventures they inspired—will live on.

Breathe Outdoors Calgary will be closed on July 1st as we prepare for liquidation.
We’ll reopen on Wednesday, July 2nd — and when we do, everything must go.

We’re clearing out the entire store — ALL our outdoor gear, clothing, footwear, equipment and more — and you’re invited to shop it before it’s gone for good.

To keep things simple, we’re using coloured stickers to mark all items in the store.

With a heavy heart we announce today that, after nearly 17 memorable years, our Breathe Outdoors South Edmonton location is now permanently closed.

This small—yet mighty—location opened in 2008, becoming the third physical store for Breathe Outdoors (or rather Campers Village back then). Nestled between Gateway Blvd and Calgary Trail, South was our second store to open in Edmonton, and was a hub for our legendary Ladies Night and VIP Beer & Gear events. This store was much more than a retail location; the people it employed, and the customers who shopped there, became integral to our entire company’s culture. Those who have attended an after-hours event at the store know what we’re talking about! It was a community.

Spearheading store operations is our one and only, talented Store Manager, Dana Soper. With contagious energy and a keen focus to create an inclusive community between her staff, Dana expertly led her team through COVID-19, our company rebrand, and ultimately her store’s closure. Dana had a knack for hiring and fostering growth within her team. They were an incredibly knowledgeable and driven group of outdoor enthusiasts and we’re proud to have called them our colleagues.

With our deepest gratitude, thank you to our staff, leadership team, and every customer from South Edmonton who enabled us to create the community that we have today. We appreciate every dog that came in for training sessions after their PetSmart visits. We appreciate every event that went way too long because we were having a good time. We appreciate and will hold these memories with us for years to come.

A message from our owner, Ron Bryant 🫶

“As the owner of Breathe Outdoors, I cannot begin to tell you how heart wrenching this decision has been. To tell 70+ people they no longer have jobs is devastating.

Our mission at Breathe Outdoors has always been to try and improve the quality of people’s lives by helping them engage in the outdoors. The outdoors, with its sights, sounds and scents is a source of peace and wonder, particularly when shared with others.

Thank you to our customers for your patronage and giving our passion a purpose. Thank you to all of those who have posted your wonderful comments, although bittersweet, they provide some comfort.

I have always been extremely proud of our staff—comments of praise about them has been a constant source of gratification, over the years.

Dear Breathe Outdoors Community,

It is with a mix of gratitude and heavy hearts that we share some news with you today. After 62 years of serving Alberta’s outdoor community, Breathe Outdoors (formerly Campers Village) will be winding down its business operations later this year. Ownership has made the difficult decision to cease operations, closing the chapter on what has been a truly remarkable journey as a locally owned & operated outdoor retailer in Alberta.

It is clear that with the downturn in the economy, with the challenges faced by the retail industry and the outdoor industry specifically, it is unsustainable for Breathe Outdoors to continue operations.

This decision is in no way a reflection of the dedication, talent, and hard work of the Breathe Outdoors team. We are incredibly proud of our employees, who have put their hearts into making this business what it is today. General Manager Doug Dea and a dedicated team will remain in place throughout the transition to ensure we continue serving you as smoothly as possible in the coming months.

"Being part of Alberta’s outdoor community has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life," Doug expresses. "We’ve swapped adventure stories, shared gear recommendations, and celebrated the great outdoors together at events and in our stores. This is more than just a business—it’s a community, and I will always cherish the connections we’ve built."

Our commitment to our community extends beyond retail, as demonstrated by our longstanding partnership with Easter Seals Camp Horizon through the Twoonies for Tents program, which has raised over $120,000 to support outdoor experiences for those with disabilities. We have also sincerely enjoyed hosting customer adventures, planning educational events, and building connections with our local community.

As this transition will be a gradual wind down and not a rapid liquidation closure, your support for our local Alberta company is more important than ever. You will still have the opportunity to shop in-store and online at www.breatheoutdoors.ca during this process. We will continue to share updates through our website and e-newsletter, so please stay connected.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being part of this journey with us. Whether you’ve been with us since the early days or just recently discovered our store, we are so grateful for your support. We hope you continue to explore, seek adventure, and find joy in the great outdoors.
