KATAWASISEW BOUTIOUE
At the core of katawasisiw Boutique lies
nehiyawewin language and cultural worldviews,
including those surrounding gender. The
language itself does not orient itself along gender
In the way that many other languages do
Instead, when using nehiyawewin, the animacy or
inanimacy
of something dictates how
referred to.
Katawasisew
s/he is beautiful,
They are beautiful would be a better translation
and better encompasses how nehiyawewin does
not label and give the same weight that English
pronouns do to gender. it allows all of us who
walk in this world to exist as we do naturally, and
on a spectrum of gender. it is clear that
nehiyawewin language recognizes this.
and it is
time for us to embrace and reclaim this.
