Ramsay Heights lookout, and a bridge most people can't name. 🌅

This week's Thursday feature comes from Jenna Day , shot in spring from the Ramsay Heights lookout. The river doing a full lazy bend, thistles going absolutely feral in the foreground, and a sky putting in more effort than most skies bother with.

Now look at the left side of the frame. There's a footbridge across the river with lights strung the whole way along it. Most of the city has driven past that river a thousand times and never seen it lit up like that.

So, two questions for you. Can you name that bridge? And be honest, had you ever heard of the Ramsay Heights lookout before this photo showed up on your feed?

Edmonton had light rail before Calgary or Toronto 🚈

In 1978 we became the first city in North America with under a million people to build a modern LRT system. Everyone said a city that size couldn't justify it.

The original line was under 7 kilometres. Belvedere to Central, through a tunnel under 99 Street. It opened in time for the Commonwealth Games.

Fort Edmonton Park is not where Fort Edmonton was.

Look at this postcard. That's the Legislature on the left, brand new. And that low wooden fort in front of it — that's the real Fort Edmonton, still standing, in the exact spot the building now occupies.

They shared that hillside for almost a decade. Then in 1915 the fort was torn down. People argued to save it. They lost.

Today there's a flat green square behind the Legislature where people lawn bowl. That's the footprint.

The park on the south side of the river is a full-scale replica, built in the 1970s. They even had to mirror the layout, because the original faced the river from the opposite bank.

Unpopular opinion: West Edmonton Mall is not a tourist attraction anymore. 🛒

It was in 1985. World's largest mall, waterpark, pirate ship, the whole thing.

In 2026 it's a mall with a water park attached and half the storefronts papered over. We keep telling visitors to go there and then quietly hope they don't ask why the sea lions are gone.

Meanwhile the river valley is the largest urban park in North America and nobody puts it on the list.

You can ride a 1912 streetcar across the High Level Bridge. 🚋

Not a replica. Not a museum piece behind glass. An actual streetcar from over a century ago, running on the top deck of the bridge, 45 metres above the river.

It's the highest streetcar bridge crossing in the world. Nothing else comes close.

It runs on a volunteer-operated line and most Edmontonians have driven under it a thousand times without knowing it's up there.

It's been sitting there in the river valley long enough that people either swear by it or won't touch it.

The LEGO Legislature might be hiding a Dementor 👀

Last time we posted this build, a few people in the comments swore there are hidden Star Wars figures tucked into it somewhere, plus a Dementor, plus a whole separate Vimy Ridge model nearby.

Anyone actually seen it in person and found any of them? 👇

Somebody in Edmonton has a fire pit going, string lights across the whole yard, and a wooden swing to sit in while it burns. The stone ring and the rock edging are the boring part that makes the rest of it work. What's the one thing you'd add to your own yard if you finally stopped putting it off?

That pirate ship in West Edmonton Mall isn't a pirate ship 🏴‍☠️

It's a full size replica of the Santa Maria, Columbus's ship, and it's been sitting in that lake since the 80s. Half the city has been calling it wrong for 40 years.
