Wood Buffalo RCMP were called to downtown Fort McMurray around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday after a concern for wellbeing.

Police located a man in the 9000 block of Franklin Avenue, where RCMP say he threatened to harm officers when they tried to engage with him.

After attempts to de-escalate the situation and the use of less-lethal weapons were unsuccessful, Police Service Dog Rookie was brought in.

Rookie helped officers apprehend the man, who sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre for treatment.

RCMP say the incident remains under investigation.

Hundreds of runners will come together at MacDonald Island Park this Sunday for an event that has become a community tradition, bringing people of all ages and experience levels together to run.

But when it all started in 2012, there wasn’t even a full marathon.

The event began as the City Centre McMurray Half Marathon. In 2018, the full 42.2 km distance was added, turning it into the marathon we know today.

That first full marathon course was also certified as a Boston Marathon qualifier.

Over the years, the event has grown to include everyone from experienced marathoners to kids getting their own chance to cross the finish line.

This year’s event is officially sold out, with more than 700 participants expected.

Beavers have spent decades building a massive dam in the Canadian wilderness that now stretches roughly 800 metres.

And it’s right here in Wood Buffalo National Park.

According to Parks Canada, several generations of beavers have likely been working at the site since the mid 1970s. Early satellite imagery from the 1970s shows the dam wasn’t there yet. Since then, beavers have moved into the area and gradually transformed the landscape.

The location may be a natural fit because of water flowing off the Birch Mountains. Changes to the landscape following wildfires in the 1950s may also have played a role.

But actually seeing it is another story. The terrain is so challenging that most Parks Canada staff have never even seen the dam themselves.

The massive structure has been getting international attention again recently, but it’s been sitting right here in Wood Buffalo for decades. 🦫

Fort McMurray is becoming the worst city in Alberta to pick a fight with a stranger. 😂

Twenty athletes from The Fort Martial Arts recently competed at the World Master Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championship, bringing home eight medals.

🥇 Kayla Meisner, Gold, White Belt
🥈 Tristan Parker, Silver, Black Belt
🥈 Christine Unruh, Silver, Brown Belt
🥈 Olivia Kapush, Silver, Grey Belt Gi
🥈 Olivia Kapush, Silver, Grey Belt No Gi
🥉 Robin O’Driscoll, Bronze, Brown Belt
🥉 Connor Cyr, Bronze, Grey Belt
🥉 Bohdin Kapush, Bronze, Yellow Belt

The competition also brought a pretty special moment for siblings Tristan Parker and Christine Unruh, who both fought in their finals at the exact same time.

For Christine, Robin and Connor, it was their first time competing internationally, and all three came home with medals.

Altogether, the team finished with one gold, four silver and three bronze medals.

Since opening in 2019, The Fort’s adult and youth competition teams have continued to grow and reach new levels each year. After another big showing on the world stage, what’s next for them?

There’s been a change of scenery for this week’s Horizon Drive In!

The movies originally scheduled for MacDonald Island Park are now moving to Fort McMurray’s beloved racetrack, Super Test Speedway, with shows running Thursday and Friday and two additional movies now scheduled for Saturday. 🍿

It might be hard to imagine today, but Fort McMurray and Waterways were once separate communities with quite the rivalry.

By the late 1930s, the two had very different identities. Fort McMurray was seen as the place where people of higher position and standing lived and worked.

Waterways had a different character. The railway from Edmonton ended there, making it an important transportation hub. Passengers and freight arrived by train, while goods heading farther north were transferred to boats and barges.

People in Waterways were proud of that role and saw themselves as hardworking and resourceful, helping drive the region’s economy.

During the workday, the two generally got along. After hours and on weekends, things got a little more competitive, especially when it came to sports.

By the late 1930s, the area had five hockey teams: Fort McMurray, Waterways, Abasand, the Signal Corps and the Cubs. Games were played outdoors, with people lining the snowbanks to watch. Things could get heated, and there were plenty of fights.

And it wasn’t just hockey. Fort McMurray and Waterways also competed for grants, tax revenue and community support.

Eventually, keeping two separate communities so close together became less practical. In 1947, they joined together under the name McMurray, later becoming Fort McMurray in 1962.

🌌 There may even be a chance to catch the northern lights during the movies. NOAA is forecasting elevated geomagnetic activity Thursday, with clear skies currently forecast for Fort McMurray.

Alberta is taking another step toward nuclear energy.

⚛️ This week, Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories signed a new agreement to collaborate on nuclear energy and regional electricity transmission, including large reactors, small modular reactors and microreactors.

🏭 Separately, smaller reactors have previously been considered as a way to provide heat and electricity for oil sands operations.

📍 Fort McMurray was one of five communities included in Alberta’s in-person nuclear consultations earlier this year.

📄 Nothing has been announced for our region, with Alberta’s nuclear roadmap expected in early 2027.
