Pop Goes the Paper

Pop Goes the Paper I love getting cards and they can be so beautiful, I want to save them. Now you can and bring them out every year to enjoy again and again.

I have always loved paper. The feel, the look, the experience of seeing something I created on a piece of paper. So I became a graphic designer. I started getting interested in pop ups when I began teaching Production at George Brown. One project asks the students to incorporate a pop up in a small book. There are a lot of people out there who create wonderful pop ups. I became so interested in t

he mechanics of the pop up, I started trying to figure out how they work. I never realized how complex they can be until I started trying to create my own. While the "slice and dice" method (like my tree) can be very spectacular, I also wanted to create something that used other methods to create effects. Last year I began to think about not only creating a card that people would keep from one year to the next, I wanted it to be a card that could convert into something special, like an ornament for your tree. Pop up ornaments are easy to store, don't take up much space and can be a lasting memory of the person who gave it to you. They are light, which means they are easy to hang on the tree.

Some of you may remember the tree from last year. This year I created a new one with some different paper. I probably won't do many as the sparkles on the paper are a real pain to deal with.

Looking for input as to whether this makes sense to people. The card comes in an envelope flat, and pivots in the middle to create a snowball. When it's open there is no visible message, but if you remove it to put on your tree, the giver's name will stay with the ornament for years to come.

This card was modified from the original Christmas card to create something special for the couple.
