🍁🏒 The Historic Memorial Cup Win🏒🍁

On May 16, 1976, with legendary OHL coach Bert Templeton, right, behind the bench, the Hamilton Fincups captured the Memorial Cup - Hamilton's second - with a 5-2 win over the New Westminster Bruins at the Montreal Forum.

The Fincups 1976 Memorial Cup win came in a thrilling tournament held at the Montreal Forum. After winning the J. Ross Robertson Cup as OMJHL champions, the Fincups, faced off against the New Westminster Bruins (WHL) and the Quebec Remparts (QMJHL). Despite losing their opening round-robin game to Quebec 4-3, the Fincups rebounded with a dominant 8-4 victory over New Westminster, scoring seven power-play goals in a penalty-filled affair. This decisive win, combined with a superior goal differential, propelled them directly into the final. In the championship game, the Fincups displayed a tenacious forechecking game to defeat the New Westminster Bruins 5-2, bringing the Memorial Cup back to Hamilton for the first time in 14 years.

The Pickering Panthers were founded in 1972 as members of the Metro Junior B Hockey League. The team still calls the Pickering Recreation Complex home, albeit under the corporately named banner of Chestnut Hill Development Recreation Complex – which rolls off the tongue.

This puck would likely have been scooped off the ice after a game in the ‘73 season. The team that year was a powerhouse, finishing the season with a remarkable 34-6-4 record, but bowed out in the 2nd round of the playoffs. In the Junior B era, the Panthers won a league title in 1985-86 after posting a 29-5-2 record.

After missing the playoffs in two consecutive seasons, the league upgraded its designation to Junior A in 1990 and unplugged itself from the OHA and Canadian Amateur Hockey Association – bringing the Panthers into their “Outlaw A” era. (This move also triggered the Central Junior B Hockey League to change its designation to Junior A – blurring the lines between Junior B and Junior A that continues today.) The Panthers change to Junior A didn’t result in any changes on the ice; putting up brutal records and missing the playoffs – save for a ‘participation ribbon’ format in ‘91-’92 – for the next five years.

Today, the Pickering Panthers compete in the Ontario Junior Hockey League as a Junior A squad. In 2021-’22, the team won the OJHL and went to Estavan, Saskatchewan to compete in the national-championship Centennial Cup. The team finished as the runner-ups, making it to the finals but being defeated 4-1 by the Brooks Bandits.

🏒 We have to give a HUUUUGE shout out to and the fans of the Sarnia Legionnaires Hockey Club Jr. B team..

This previous-periennial contender is setting records for futility - sporting an 0-43-0 record.

Yet, on Thursday night, a crowd of 584 showed up to cheer them on.

That's impressive. 👏🙏

Win or lose, our local teams bring communities together. This is invaluable. We all hope that brighter days are ahead for the Legionnayand their fans.
