The first ever cutting garden I planted for my kids in 2020 showed us the power of gifted flowers. The emotions it could generate with such a simple offering.
I swear the hardest part of this job has been the mental side.
The valuing of my own worth, time, knowledge and labour.
Somehow putting a price on it 😬. Showing up with flowers every single weekend from May to October, despite being away with my kids, or my road being closed for construction for 2 of my 3 years of business 🙃
My first year had many, many weekends where I sold nothing. So I had to work that brain muscle a lot. And it’s funny how as you grow, your threshold changes.
Year 1 & even year 2 me would have been thrilled with the sales we did manage the last 2 weekends. But I think I’ve been spoiled by this amazing community this summer, and I had to eat a little humble pie.
But, rarely do the flowers ever end up in the compost. I try extremely hard to make time on the Monday to gift any that are left.
I used to go to retirement homes as my default. But soon realized that there are plenty of individuals, young, old, male, female that can use a pick me up too. Sometimes it’s the postal ladies, or the librarians, or teachers, other times it’s the contractor who stopped for lunch, or the exhausted mom walking out of the rec center with her gaggle of screeching children.
Being able to tap back into the roots of why a cutting garden hooked me to begin with is the lemonade from a lemon-style sales weekend. 🥰
