The beautiful allure of Victorian Opalescent glass! 💙🤍
It is sometimes said that photos do not do pieces justice and when it comes to opalescent glass that couldn't be truer!
"Opalescent Glass" was created as early as the 1850's - 60 period. It became very popular in the 1880 's - 90's, and again in the 1920's - 40's.
Opalescent Glass was a very difficult process to make and many call it Art Glass and for a good reason.
The pieces in the photo began as turquoise blue glass and clear glass. The pieces are fired in their mold with that colour in mind. When they are formed and taken out if the mold and still very hot, tin oxide is added while it is still hot, which creates the white area. Then the piece is re - heated at a high temperature to dissolve the added mineral and to get the colour to run. When it does this it creates the "fire" that is known in the gemstone, Opals and also the fire in opalescent glass.
Then the top is either tooled to shape it or it is swung to create the unique top edge.
There are no two pieces exactly the same, as it depends on how much tin oxide is added and how it mixes in the recipe and of course how the top is finished!
The results? A gorgeous piece of opalescent glass that when held to a light, you can enjoy the unique colour and the fire!
These beauties as well as other opalescent pieces will be the Toronto Vintage Show next weekend.
Be sure to stop by booth # 400 and check them out!
